Infernal Affairs I - The Shocking Secrets & Details behind this classic movie
Following the previous episode of Infernal affairs 2,
Today we will review the infernal affair 1, the first movie of the sequels.
Infernal Affairs tells the gripping tale of two moles on opposite sides of the law. Set in modern-day Hong Kong, the film follows Lau Kin Ming (Andy Lau), a triad member infiltrating the police, and Ngai Wing Yan (Tony Leung), a police officer embedded in the triads. Their paths cross in a tense game of cat and mouse, where their dual lives threaten to unravel their identities and destinies.
The story begins with Sam Hong (Eric Tsang), the ruthless triad leader, planting Lau in the police force to serve as his spy. Simultaneously, Wong Chi Shing (Anthony Wong), a high-ranking police officer, secretly assigns Ngai to infiltrate Sam’s gang. Over the years, both moles rise through the ranks of their respective organizations, earning trust while leading lives of constant deception.
The first major conflict arises during a high-stakes drug deal between Sam and a Thai gang. Wong leads a carefully planned raid, hoping to dismantle Sam’s operation. However, Lau tips off Sam, allowing him to evade capture, while Ngai relays critical information to Wong using Morse code. The operation ultimately fails, leaving both sides suspicious of a mole in their ranks. This sequence underscores the fragile balance both protagonists must maintain to protect their secret lives.
As tensions rise, Wong grows increasingly certain of a leak within the police force. At the same time, Sam begins purging his organization, suspecting a traitor among his men. Ngai finds himself in constant danger, both from Sam’s growing paranoia and his own crumbling sense of self. The only person who knows Ngai’s true identity is Wong, and their bond becomes a lifeline for Chan’s survival.
The film reaches its first climax when Wong and Ngai arrange a rooftop meeting to discuss their next steps. Unbeknownst to them, Sam’s men are following Wong. In a devastating turn, Wong sacrifices himself to protect Ngai, leaving the undercover agent alone and vulnerable. Wong’s death is a pivotal moment that shifts the narrative’s focus to the ultimate confrontation between Ngai and Lau.
In the film’s final act, Ngai discovers Lau’s true allegiance. Determined to expose him, Chan lures Lau to a rooftop, where the two finally face off. Ngai pleads for a chance to “be a good man,” echoing Ngai’s own desires for redemption. Their conversation highlights the parallel yet opposing paths they’ve walked—both longing for freedom from their double lives but trapped by their choices.
As their confrontation intensifies, Lam, another mole placed by Sam, arrives and fatally shoots Ngai. Lau uses this opportunity to cover his tracks, erasing Ngai’s legacy and solidifying his position within the police. However, Lau’s victory feels hollow as he grapples with guilt and the loss of his moral compass.
Infernal Affairs explores themes of identity, loyalty, and the blurred lines between good and evil. Both Lau and Ngai live dual lives, struggling to reconcile their true selves with their imposed roles. The film’s title, inspired by the Buddhist concept of “Avici” (a realm of endless suffering), reflects the characters’ internal torment and their inability to escape their fates.
Symbolism plays a significant role throughout the film. Rooftops serve as recurring settings for moral confrontations, representing both literal and metaphorical heights of tension. The use of music, such as the haunting song in the audio shop scene, and details like Wong’s Rolex watch add depth and foreshadow critical moments in the story.
With its masterful storytelling, unforgettable performances, and philosophical undertones, Infernal Affairs stands as a hallmark of Hong Kong cinema. Its exploration of identity and morality leaves a lasting impression, reminding viewers of the cost of deception and the universal human desire for redemption.
