The shooting occurred on Oct. 14, 2023, inside Bubbaz Bar and Grill. It ended with a police officer shooting a man who was suspected of pointing a gun at the officer.

Prior to the officer’s involvement, shots were fired inside Bubbaz Bar and Grill. Three people were ultimately injured in the shooting, including the man shot by police.

Mar-Kel Sampson was the man shot by the IMPD officer who was working security. He survived his injuries but was ultimately charged with three felonies. Sampson was found not guilty after a jury trial in November 2024.

With the criminal case completed, IMPD released edited bodycam footage that shows the chaotic night.

IMPD said the officer who shot Sampson was working security at Bubbaz Bar and Grill in full uniform when he heard about two groups threatening to shoot each other inside the establishment. The officer was in the entryway when shots were fired inside the bar and grill.

Body camera footage shows the officer turn and spot Sampson. Sampson appears to be holding an object in his hand.

The officer claimed the object was a gun, and ordered Sampson to drop it. The officer then fired at Sampson after the man pointed the object in the officer’s direction.

After shooting Sampson, the IMPD officer walks out of the establishment and activates his bodycam. When activated, the body camera records the last 30 seconds but without audio. Because of this, there is no audio during the shooting of Sampson.

Outside the bar and grill, several men can be seen attempting to leave the bar and grill, including a wounded Sampson. The officer repeatedly shouts at Sampson and others to get on the ground, with several of the men inching away the moment the officer turns away.

The bodycam footage highlights what appears to be a gun lying on the ground during these interactions. At some point, as the officer attempts to wrangle several different individuals, a suspect scoops up the gun.

While the officer is repeatedly telling Sampson to get on the ground, other individuals can be heard screaming at the police officer.

“My buddy is shot, bro!” one of them says.

Sampson continuously denies having a gun. Once he is handcuffed, he informs the officer that he has been shot.

Sampson was transported from the scene in critical condition. He was charged with battery by means of a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm. On Nov. 13, 2024, Sampson was found not guilty after a jury trial.

IMPD said no firearms were recovered from the scene.
