Sporter 3-12X44 Scope Overview - Shooting and Through the Scope

Hello world, and welcome back to the range. Today we're sending lead downrange through a classic Remington 700 in .30-06. Mounted on top is our new Sporter 3-12X44.

A few details about the scope:
44mm Objective
1" Tube
Parallax from 10yds to infinity
1/4 MOA clicks
Capped Turrets
(Second Focal Plane) Duplex or MilDot reticle

.30-06 is a traditional cartridge with plenty of stopping power. We're using some old British ammo, not tuned for the rifle. Because of this, the rifle is shooting about 2MOA. Not great, but enough for functional accuracy.

Step one, as always, is to get the rifle boresighted. This is done by removing the bolt, looking down the bore, and trying to align the scope to point at the same spot the bore is framing. It's a pretty easy way to get on paper.

The paper target starts at 25 yards. After boresighting, it's time to fire some rounds and dial in the zero. The first shot was off to the left, so most of the correction was to adjust windage to the right. As a curious point, Chris' boresighting was off by 7'20", or about 1/8th of a degree.

With the rifle on point at 25, we moved the paper out to 100 yards. This is a more traditional distance for zeroing. Here, the shots were high and (again) somewhat left. After a first rough adjustment, a three-shot group was put down. This confirmed the spread.

Not good enough precision for me to want to push it out farther. Even so, I now know the rifle will be on paper with other ammo when I decide to load for it.

The scope performed admirably. .30-06 delivers more recoil than standard hunting cartridges, but still didn't pose a problem. I always prefer to have gear that's more rugged than I'll likely need, just in case I have need of it.
