In Exodus 1:1-22, the descendants of Jacob (Israel) have multiplied greatly in Egypt, fulfilling God’s promise to make them a great nation. However, a new Pharaoh arises who does not remember Joseph and sees the Israelites as a threat. Fearing their growing numbers, he enslaves them, forcing them into brutal labor to suppress them.

Despite Pharaoh’s oppression, the Israelites continue to grow in number. In desperation, Pharaoh orders the Hebrew midwives to kill all newborn Hebrew boys, but they fear God and refuse to obey. As a result, Pharaoh decrees that every Hebrew baby boy must be thrown into the Nile.

This chapter sets the stage for the emergence of Moses, God’s chosen deliverer, who will later lead Israel out of slavery. It highlights themes of oppression, divine providence, and God’s plan for redemption.
