Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said on Wednesday that he will propose life sentences for those convicted of trafficking over 40mg of fentanyl if he was elected prime minister.

Standing behind a sign saying "Stop the Drugs," at a Vancouver shipping port on Wednesday, Poilievre remarked that "we should crack down on drugs not to please President Trump, but to ensure that not one more mother has to bury her face in her hands on learning that her son died of an overdose in a back alley somewhere."

U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to pause tariffs on Canada after a phone call with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday.

On Tuesday, several Republican senators applauded Trump's use of tariffs as a bargaining chip to secure the border.
