THIS PLACE IS A SECRET! LOVERS COME HERE. RAREST FISH IN THE WORLD HERE.
The Conasauga River is a river that runs through southeast Tennessee and northwest Georgia. The Conasauga River is 93 miles and drains into the Oostanaula River, a tributary of the Coosa River and part of the watershed of the Gulf of Mexico. The river is home to over 90 species of fish and 25 surviving species of freshwater mussels. Its watershed encompasses over 500,000 acres in two states, multiple counties, and two ecologically different regions.
The Conasauga River is the most westerly trout water on public land in Georgia. It is the only river in Tennessee that is not a part of the Mississippi River watershed.
The Conasauga River teems with biodiversity. The river in southern Tennessee and northern Georgia is known for its exceptional mussel, snail, crayfish and fish biodiversity. This river system supports 10 fish and mussel species that are federally listed as endangered or threatened and 20 other aquatic species that are either listed by the states or at-risk of federal listing. The holiday, bridled, and trispot darters are among those fish facing declines and at risk of being listed. Many of these species are imperiled because of sediment, nutrient and pesticide pollution. NRCS is working with private landowners in the Conasauga River watershed in both states to improve water quality to support the species’ recovery.
The Conasauga basin holds some 90 native fish species—or 10 percent of North America’s fish fauna—and more than a dozen of those species are rare or endangered. The Conasauga has historically supported at least 44 mussel species, but only about 20 species remain. Then, there are the plants. The Southern Blue Ridge supports nearly 4,000 plant species, of which 400 are considered rare and an astounding 250 are found nowhere else in the world.
