Police officers early Sunday morning shot and injured a man involved in a hit-and-run crash in west Houston when he allegedly exited his vehicle holding a firearm and turned towards the officers, officials said.

Officers responded to a call about a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Hillcroft Street just before 3 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, police observed a driver still sitting inside of a vehicle that remained at the scene of the crash.

“Officers approached to check on him, to check on the accident,” Assistant Chief Wyatt Martin said during a press briefing Sunday. “At that point, the driver exited his vehicle, and when he exited his vehicle, he exited his vehicle with a firearm in his hand.”

Officers allegedly gave the man commands to drop the firearm. They shot and struck the man in his lower extremities while he turned towards them after failing to comply with their instructions, Martin said.

The unidentified man, around 40-years-old, was taken to the hospital and remained in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries Sunday, he said.

Police were still investigating the cause of the accident. The other vehicle involved in the crash was not on the scene when police arrived.

The two officers involved in the shooting were not injured. Police interviewed witnesses who remained on the scene Sunday and will view camera footage taken on nearby security cameras.

“We do not know that he ever discharged his weapon,” Martin said of the man. “You can clearly see it in his hand on the officer's body worn cameras.”
