In the Democratic Republic of Congo, hundreds of inmates escaped from a men's prison and then raped and burned alive more than 160 female prisoners

More than 160 female prisoners were raped and then burned alive during a prison break in the Democratic Republic of Congo city of Goma, the UN has said, BBC News reports.

An internal UN document, according to the BBC, says that between 165 and 167 women were attacked by male prisoners during a prison break. The report says that most of the women in the prison were killed when the prisoners set fire to the prison.

Goma, a major city of more than a million people, was captured when the Rwandan-backed M23 group rapidly advanced through eastern Congo.
