Uralvagonzavod conducted tests of the T-90M with the Arena-M active protection system

The updated radar system is represented by six small-sized receiving and transmitting antenna posts distributed along the perimeter of the turret armor plates. They provide a 360-degree view of approaching ATGMs and, probably, enemy FPV drones. The onboard niches contain containers with interceptor ammunition, the command to launch which is issued by the hardware control module based on data from the antenna radars.

The speed of targets hit by the Arena-M is 1200 m/s, which allows it to intercept almost the entire range of ATGMs and tactical missiles, including the American APKWS II L3Harris Vampire systems. The system has probably received a software and hardware update and additional thermal imaging sensors to combat FPV drones on fiber optics, which are immune to electronic warfare systems.

The vertical viewing sector of the Arena-M radar antenna modules remains an open question. The higher it is, the greater the effectiveness in countering Javelin-type diving ATGMs and copters operating in drop mode. It is also necessary to intercept M712 Copperhead diving guided missiles, large batches of which have been supplied by the Pentagon to the artillery units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
