Five Moral Foundations - a brief summary for Toastmasters

Everybody makes moral judgments. However, because the foundations upon which we base them differ from person to person, the thoughts that some express in speeches strike others as immoral.

This speech is strictly to inform. How it happens that people see things differently.

Haidt's five foundations, more complete descriptions of which are easy to find on the Internet, are:
Care
Fairness
Loyalty
Authority
and Sanctity, or purity

Haidt contends that people on the political left embrace care and fairness significantly more strongly than the others, while those on the right accord all five more or less equal weight. Given that the five foundations can pull in different directions on any given moral question, it is not surprising that there are disagreements.
