At least 20,000 federal employees have accepted President Donald Trump's buyout offer ahead of Thursday's deadline, a White House official confirmed Tuesday.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management announced last Tuesday that all federal employees could receive eight months of pay and benefits through September if they resigned by February 6 – in an effort to significantly reduce the size of the federal workforce.

These resignations account for about 1% of the federal workforce, which exceeds 2 million employees—falling short of the administration's target of 5% to 10% participation.

However, the official noted that the number of deferred resignations is ‘rapidly increasing,’ with the largest surge in sign-ups expected within the final 24 to 48 hours before the deadline.
