A baby's life is full of learning, growth, and discovery. In the first few months, babies sleep a lot, eat often, and are learning how to interact with the world.
Sleep
Newborns sleep 12 to 20 hours a day, waking every 2 to 3 hours to feed
They may stir after 40 minutes and need help to fall back asleep
Sleeping on their stomach increases the risk of SIDS
Movement
Newborns' movements are jerky at first, but they start to control them after a couple of months
By two months, they can support their head when held
By three months, they can lift their head and chest while on their tummy
Social and emotional development
Babies are interested in faces and voices from birth
They can differentiate between different faces by the first or second month
They can identify their mother by sight by the third month
Feeding
Babies need to feed throughout the night in the first few months
Human milk is ideal, but infant formula is an adequate substitute
Babies can usually be weaned after they are six months old
Other development
Their vision improves from 20/800 at two weeks to 20/20 at five years
They develop reflexes like sucking, blinking, grasping, and limb withdrawal
They discover their hands and can grab toys and bring them to their mouth by three months
