If this song sounds familiar, you've probably heard the Rollins Band's 1987 cover. This is the original by pioneering New York synthpunk duo Suicide, from their self-titled debut album (Red Star, 1977). And yes, the song was inspired by the Marvel Comics character Ghost Rider: Suicide vocalist Alan Vega even took to swinging a chain, Ghost Rider-style, as part of his confrontational stage performances. Both musically and lyrically, this is one of the defining statements of the punk era.
Alan Vega - voice
Martin Rev - keyboard / effects / rhythm machine
Written by Suicide; produced by Marty Thau. Art by Fernando Ruiz.
