Betamax was a videotape format developed by Sony in 1975 as a competitor to VHS. It was an analog magnetic tape format designed for home video recording and playback. Betamax offered superior video and audio quality compared to VHS, but it ultimately lost the "format war" due to several factors, including shorter recording time, higher costs, and limited licensing compared to VHS, which was backed by JVC and adopted by more manufacturers.

Despite its commercial failure in the consumer market, Betamax remained in use in professional and broadcasting industries for many years. Sony continued producing Betamax tapes until 2016, long after it had disappeared from mainstream use.
