A 16-year-old is in custody in Fairfax County, accused of stabbing a police officer in a violent confrontation on Monday.

The Fairfax County Police Department held a press conference on Tuesday, where they showed body-worn camera footage of the incident, which happened around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3 on Fair Lakes Parkway in Fair Lakes.

Police say the teen was the one who called 911, saying that he had killed two people, which was determined to be false.

When officers arrived, they exited their police cruiser and began talking while outside the car. That's when the suspect came charging at them, seemingly unprovoked, while wildly brandishing the knife.

The teen reportedly stabbed the officer once on the left side of the torso above the rib cage with a knife before being taken into custody.

"It's a dangerous job whether you're making a traffic stop, whether you're responding to a domestic violence call for service or whether you're just walking into a store to check on the welfare of the business," Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said.

The police department has had interactions with the suspect in the past, they say but declined to comment on the nature of the incidents due to his age.

"Something has gone wrong in that young man's life. There's no doubt about it. I think that's something we all can probably agree on," Chief Davis said. "It's sad when you hear about the age."

Video shows the suspect go down to the ground after stabbing the officer, and police are able to handcuff him. Chief Davis says no weapons were used on him.

Davis said the officer didn't initially realize that he had been stabbed until after the suspect was detained. He was later taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be ok.

Police say they are not releasing the identity of the officer, but say he is a six-year veteran of the department.

"The dangers of policing are ever present," Davis said.

The teen has been charged with felony malicious wounding, but Davis says he is not being charged as an adult. No additional information has been released at this time.
