Paint It Black (Rolling Stones, The, 1966). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2025-01-02. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Paint It Black," written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, was the Stone's 10th top 40 hit and third no. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart hitting the top position in 1966 (Whitburn, 2013). When Jagger was asked why he wrote a song about death, he replied "I don't know. It's been done before. It's not an original thought by any means. It all depends on how you do it" (songfacts, 2024). Brian Jones (guitarist) played the sitar on the record. Keith Richards said: “We had the sitars, [and] we thought we’d try them out in the studio. To get the right sound on ‘Paint It Black’ we found the sitar fitted perfectly. We tried a guitar but you can’t bend it enough . . . [the beat was also different] It was a different style to everything I’d done before. Maybe it was the Jew in me. It’s more to me like ‘Hava Nagila’ or some Gypsy lick. Maybe I picked it up from my grandad. It’s definitely on a different curve to everything else” (T. Benitez-Eves, americansongwriter, Mar. 24, 2022).

Lyrics:

I see a red door
And I want it painted black
No colors anymore
I want them to turn black

I see the girls walk by
Dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head
Until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars
And they're all painted black
With flowers and my love
Both never to come back

I've seen people turn their heads
And quickly look away
Like a newborn baby
It just happens everyday

I look inside myself
And see my heart is black
I see my red door
I must have it painted black

Maybe then, I'll fade away
And not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up
When your whole world is black

No more will my green sea
Go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing
Happening to you

If I look hard enough
Into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me
Before the morning comes

I see a red door
And I want it painted black
No colors anymore
I want them to turn black

I see the girls walk by
Dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head
Until my darkness goes

I wanna see it painted
Painted black
Black as night
Black as coal
I wanna see the sun
Blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted
Painted black, yeah
