Starcraft is a 4X real time strategy game where one needs to construct a base, explore the surrounding area, expand their influence and exterminate the enemy. Similar games of this genre include Warcraft, Red Alert and the Command and Conquer series.

Civilization and Master of Orion are considered turn-based games of the same genre.

There is a human civil war brewing between various factions as humans are oft to do.
There are the zerg, which are an insect faction who think humans are tasty.
There are the Protoss who are mysterious and the prospect that humans have extra-sensory abilities piques their interest.

Starcraft is definitely a commitment game. While the multiplayer aspect of Starcraft is what gives the game its great reviews, the campaign isn't too bad.

This version is the original 1998 release. We know that the graphics are dated and there are a host of improvements which could be made. Blizzard has done all those improvements so if someone wishes those improvements, they are available.
