Finding ancient history in Texas libraries while his father continued his education in medicine, Robert E. Howard was inspired by the story of the Picts of Britain and many other peoples across Europe and Asia. He used them to populate his Hyborian universe where characters like Kull and Conan lived.
However, one of his modern influences was none other than H.P. Lovecraft, himself. Often regarded as the first writer of modern horror, Lovecraft's reputation as an eccentric preceded him, even during his time. No strangers to controversy, Lovecraft and Howard found common ground in some of their less pleasant ideas.
Nevertheless, they both stand tall among genre writers.
