Ukraine’s Robot Wars – Ground Drones Emerge From Shadows

Ground-based drones are becoming an influential part of the battlefield in Ukraine, alongside aerial and seaborne drones.

Ukraine’s Minister for Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, revealed that 100 unmanned ground systems (UGS) drones have been tested for combat, with roles including medical evacuation, logistics, and assault missions.

Despite challenges from Russian electronic warfare, advances in AI are improving their effectiveness.

Germany’s ARX Robotics is delivering 30 AI-powered Gereon UGS drones to Ukraine for supply transport and casualty evacuation, while Estonia’s Milrem Robotics has supplied 15 THeMIS UGS units and plans to increase production.

The THeMIS drones are used for logistics, reconnaissance, demining, and combat, with new models including anti-tank versions, the Kyiv Post has reported.

In December, Ukraine successfully conducted an attack using UGS and FPV drones, highlighting their growing role in offsetting manpower limitations.
