Aaron Freeman, 35, was killed in the confrontation.

Two officers were wounded while attempting to serve a warrant at an apartment on the 700 block of Grand Avenue during the early morning hours of Jan. 29.

West Haven Officer Robert Rappa and West Haven Police Sergeant Joseph Riehl were injured but are recovering.

Footage shows West Haven police officers and members of a DEA task force entering the apartment, where they initially encounter a woman, who is moved aside. Officers then approach Freeman, who can be seen peeking from a bedroom doorway.

"Show me your hands," an officer commands before gunfire erupts.

Freeman fired multiple shots, striking Rappa in the leg. Rappa retreated to a bathroom for cover, calling out to his fellow officers.

"Rappa, where?" another officer is heard asking on the footage.

Body camera footage from another officer shows him taking shelter in a stairwell while exchanging gunfire with Freeman.

The West Haven Police Special Response Team arrived with long guns and safety shields. Footage shows Sgt. Joseph Riehl holding up a shield when another round of gunfire from Freeman strikes him.

"I'm hit, I'm hit," Riehl can be heard saying as he staggers and calls for help.

Officers returned fire, and state police later found a firearm near Freeman’s body.

An autopsy determined Freeman died from gunshot wounds to the torso and extremities. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
