Trump EXPELS Pedro Sánchez and MARGINALS Spain in his Round of Contacts

The relationship between Spain and the US has never been a priority for Donald Trump, but his disdain in this new phase reaches humiliating levels for Pedro Sánchez's government. Despite the historical importance of bilateral ties and strategic military bases on Spanish territory, the White House has decided to exclude Spain from the first round of international contacts, leaving Sánchez in a clear second place on Trump's diplomatic agenda.

The blow is even more significant if one considers that the new Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, of Cuban origin and perfectly Spanish-speaking, has preferred to establish dialogues with countries ideologically related to Trumpism, such as Hungary and Italy, or strategic on the global stage, such as France and Germany. Meanwhile, Spain is conspicuous by its absence, even being ignored in favour of Morocco, whose close relationship with Washington has led in the past to important decisions, such as the recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.

Trump's indifference towards Spain is not new, but his renewed attitude is a clear response to the tensions that have built up with Sánchez, who has not hesitated to criticise the Republican magnate and his circle, referring to them with derogatory terms such as techno-caste. Since the arrival of the socialist leader to La Moncloa in 2018, the disagreements have been constant. Trump has never hidden his disdain for Spain's low investment in defence, going so far as to ridicule Sánchez at a NATO summit.

While Rubio is holding talks with more than 34 world leaders and his first state trip includes Latin America, Asia and Europe, Spain is still waiting for a simple phone call. Trump does not hide his disinterest: Spain is not a nuclear power, it is not in the Trumpist orbit and, for his administration, it does not even deserve to be part of the first rounds of dialogue. For Sánchez, this snub is not just a diplomatic setback, but a humiliation that makes it clear that, in Trump's world, Spain plays an irrelevant role. Please Like and Subscribe.
