Mark 9:20
And they brought the boy to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he began rolling about and foaming at the mouth.
Mark 9:21
And He asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood.
Mark 9:22
"And it has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!"
This was an extremely bad case. This was almost as bad as the man possessed in Gadara. If this spirit had stayed in the boy for many more years, this may have been a worse condition that the man from Gadara.
Mark 9:23
And Jesus said to him, "'If You can!' All things are possible to him who believes."
All things are possible to him who believes. What does it mean to "believe?" It means to entrust Him and obey His Word (Psalm 37:3-7, 119:42-48, 2 Chron. 20:20).
Mark 9:24
Immediately the boy's father cried out and began saying, "I do believe; help my unbelief."
Mark 9:25
And when Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again."
Mark 9:26
And after crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, "He is dead!"
Mark 9:27
But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up.
This is probably another case of Yeshua raising someone from the dead. He is giving them another example of His mission before He explains it to them once again.
Mark 9:28
And when He had come into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?"
Mark 9:29
And He said to them, "This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer."
Yeshua said this kind cannot come out by anything but prayer. Plus, it needs to be the will of the Father, not just our will.
Mark 9:30
And from there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He was unwilling for anyone to know about it.
Mark 9:31
For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later."
Yeshua always mentions His death and resurrection together.
Mark 9:32
But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.
Yeshua not only has announced His death and resurrection to them, but He has illustrated it through the demon possessed boy. The disciples still don't understand. They think this statement can mean anything but what He says.
