The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Forty-Eight.

The Offering.

The welcome had been warm, and the son of Crao thanked N'Gohak, the clan chief.
Rahan regrets very much having nothing to offer you, as is customary!
Nothing to offer?
And this necklace?
And your knife?

You ask an impossible thing, brother!
His collar and his knife are sacred to Rahan!
Only death could tear them from him!

Memories assailed Rahan. He revisited Crao leaving him the necklace with five claws.
My father, and my father's father, wore this necklace! This honor is yours, Rahan!
You will be faithful to what it represents until your last breath!
Rahan swears it, Crao!

Page Two.

He recalled the savage clashes from which he had emerged alive thanks to his ivory knife.
Ra-ha-ha!

N'Gohak will understand that Raha cannot separate himself from his necklace or his knife!
The only offering he can make to your clan is his sincere friendship!

Do not let yourself be fooled by fine words, N'Gohak!
"Fire-Hair" can only stay among us if he demonstrates his strength and courage.
Thus thinks Hagan!

Are you ready to face me in fair combat, "Fire-Hair"?
A murmur arose and the son of Crao understood that he could not refuse without being considered a coward and driven from this territory.

The ivory knife went and stuck itself between the feet of N'Gohak-the-chief.

And the hand-to-hand combat began.
If Hagan was more robust, the son of Crao was more flexible and more nimble.

Ten times he almost got knocked down!
Ten times he escaped from his opponent's formidable grip!

The clan cheered each of his feints and N'Gohak approved like a connoisseur.

Page Seven.

He let himself roll towards the bushes where he had stuck his spears.
A terrible roar arose.

The trapped monster threw itself from side to side without being able to free itself.

The skin on the belly must be less thick! Perhaps Rahan may touch the heart!
His tail cut through the undergrowth and shattered the branches.
He sometimes reared up, offering his yellowish belly.

The son of Crao was wrong. Twice, spears ricocheted from the monster's skin!

Since Rahan does not have enough strength, he only has one solution left.

The moment the monitor lizard stood up, Rahan once again rushed forward and thrust his last spear in front of the monster!

Page Eight.

He only had time to dive, narrowly avoiding the beast, which let itself fall back down.

The giant reptile whipped the ground with its tail one last time, then it stopped.
The spear on which it had impaled itself had pierced its heart!

Ra-ha-ha!
Then the cry of victory of the son of Crao rose up, carried by echoes to the distant hills.

Hardly had its echoes died away when N'Gohak and his hunters appeared, out of breath from their race, stunned.
“Hair of Fire” has killed the “Varank”!

The flesh of the Varank belongs to us brothers!
It will be Rahan's offering to your clan!

Impossible N'Gorak!
He cannot be one of us without having undergone the test of the great jump!

Page Nine.

Soon after.
You have to tie the vines around your ankles and jump into the void!
Having already undergone it before, the son of Crao knew this ordeal.

He was heading towards the bamboo tower, when.
Wait a moment! "Fire-Hair"! Hagan will show you how to do it.
He will prove his courage to you!

Under threat from his own people, Hagan had to comply.

Look! Here is the proof of his perfidy!
N'Gorak-the-chief, brandished the vines whose fibers, visibly, had been half-severed!!

It was still dark this morning when I saw him climbing up the tower.
I quickly understood what he was up to.

Hagan the coward suffered the fate he intended for Rahan! And it is only justice!

The son of Crao, who had almost come to join the "Territory-of-shadows", thought that N'Gorak's justice was perhaps a little too hasty!
