A five-person retail theft crew in San Bernardino County was taken down after stealing more than $6,000 in merchandise, leading police in a high-speed chase followed by a foot pursuit that ultimately ended on the campus of a local high school, video shows.

The Jan. 27 incident began at the Colonies Crossroads shopping mall at 1931 N. Campus Avenue in Upland, according to Upland Police Department.

Store surveillance cameras captured the five suspects, four adults and one juvenile, as they entered the store wearing hoodies and face coverings, grabbed armfuls of clothing and left the shop without paying.

Police quickly located the suspects’ vehicle and during a pursuit learned it had reportedly been stolen in a robbery and carjacking out of Downey.

Authorities added that during the pursuit, the suspects rammed two vehicles, one of which had children inside, before getting on the eastbound 210 Freeway where the California Highway Patrol joined the chase, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department tracked the suspects from the air.

On the 15 Freeway, footage captured from SBSD’s helicopter shows the suspects pulling onto the shoulder, bailing the vehicle and attempting to flee on foot.

One of the crew was quickly captured after failing to get over a chain link fence.

The other four suspects made their way over several more fences before and made their way onto the campus of Etiwanda High School, where they were arrested with assistance from the school’s security and officers with the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department.

Some $6,500 worth of merchandise was located in the suspects’ vehicle.

“All five suspects were booked for a number of felonies, including commercial burglary, conspiracy, felony evading, felony child endangerment, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon,” police said.
