Note: all tracks recorded under the names Academy 23 or UNIT are the property of DNA Records and protected by copyright, regardless of who wrote the works concerned. This is a track from our 52nd album ‘Science & Sanity’. About 30% of it was completed circa 1988; I finally finished it in 2023.

I am too tired to sleep. I have a feeling so deep that still it’s making me weep.
I had to think twice before I took your advice and now I’m paying the price.
I wish I knew if this state of mind was due to you or is reality a liar?
Because though you say it’s in my head, I usually find there’s no smoke without fire.

Why do you hate me? Why don’t you like me? Why do you believe I’m useless at everything?
Why do you ignore me; pretend you never saw me? Why do you believe I’m nothing but a joke?
Yes you do. Yes you do. Yes you do. I know you do because they told me.

Why do you despise me? Go on, chastise me. Why do you laugh behind my back?
Why don’t you want me or even care about me? Is it intelligence that I lack?
Yes it is. Yes it is. Yes it is. I know it is because they told me.

I am a dog end in the ashtray of another burnt out day.
I haven’t any friends and if I had, they’d run away.
I could paint a picture of the world I see
but everyone would laugh at it, except of course, for me.
I could do a drawing of what I saw today
but I know it would be useless and you’d hate it anyway.
I’d like to do so many things and be as clever as you
but you’ve never any interest in anything I do.
I know these words are hopeless and the music’s pretty bad,
so regard it as a document of a mind gone mad.

Girl, when you left me, you made a bad mistake
because I’m a jealous guy and now I’m filled with hate
and you know my thoughts grow dim and my sense of reason dull.
When I see you with him, I want to crack open your skull.
I guess it’s women like you who make men turn to men.
Ah, but that didn’t happen to me because I bounced back again.

I want to see you suffer, girl, for what you did to me
but then again, what’s to be gained from revenge and jealousy?
My best friend turns to queers but I just turn to pills.
It’s a chemical substitute for you and I don’t care if it kills me.

You can keep kosher most fanatically
but does that make you superior to me?
You can observe Shabbos religiously
but does that make you superior to me?
You can pray 3 times a day full of piety
but does that make you superior to me?

Now I’ve taken my revenge and finally made you cry,
I find I can’t live myself as each day passes by.
I have to find some help though I know I don’t deserve it,
for loneliness is my sentence but I don’t feel I can serve it.

My life is a letter never sent.
My life is a bank cheque never spent.
My life is a lake that has no water.
My life is a weight without a quarter.
My life is a city with no people.
My life is a church without a steeple
but I don’t care because I’m out of my head and I’ve lost my mind,
so please excuse me: I have another world to find.
Goodbye to the friends I never had. I’m going to leave my life behind.
