Tonight I will be screening (with minimal commentary) “Alphaville” directed by Jean Luc-Godard. I very much recommend you watch the film before or after this, independently, without my narration. I believe it is a very important film worth examining both as art & research into Artificial Intelligence, in equal measure.

I am not doing this for entertainment though and we’ll be concentrating on the real-world correlations to what is communicated by Alphaville. If you aren’t familiar…this is the synopsis from Wikipedia…

Alphaville: une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution(Alphaville: A Strange Adventure of Lemmy Caution) is a 1965French New Wavetech noirfilm written and directed byJean-Luc Godard. It starsEddie Constantine,Anna Karina,Howard VernonandAkim Tamiroff.

Lemmy Caution is asecret agentwith the code number of 003 from "the Outlands". Entering Alphaville in hisFord Mustang, which he refers to as aFord Galaxie, he poses as a journalist named Ivan Johnson and claims to work for theFigaro-Pravdanewspaper. Caution is on a series of missions. First, he searches for the missing agent Henri Dickson; second, he is to capture or kill the creator of Alphaville, Professor von Braun; lastly, he aims to destroy Alphaville and its dictatorial computer, Alpha 60.
Alpha 60 is a sentient computer system created by von Braun, which is in complete control of all of Alphaville.

Alpha 60 has outlawed free thought and individualist concepts like love, poetry, and emotion in the city, replacing them with contradictory concepts or eliminating them altogether. One of Alpha 60's dictates is that "people should not ask 'why', but only say 'because'". People who show signs of emotion are presumed to be acting illogically and are executed. There is adictionaryin every hotel room that is continuously updated when words that are deemed to evoke emotion become banned. As a result, Alphaville is an inhuman, alienated society.

You can already see this film seems highly predictive in nature…I’ll get into the specifics but let’s be clear. In 1965, when this film was produced, Wernher Von Braun (former Nazi SS) was very much in control of NASA. This film seems to make direct reference to an Artificial Intelligence ‘attributed’ to a ‘fictional’ Professor Von Braun whose real name, in the film is LEONard Nosferatu…interesting, right?

Tonight is all about Artificial Intelligence based Timeline Loops as discussed conceptually in Alphaville…this film seems to have a larger purpose. I feel like I should review it with this audience & discuss what it might be trying to communicate.
