Elephants are magnificent and intelligent creatures, known for their immense size, strong social bonds, and remarkable memories. There are three species of elephants: the African bush elephant (*Loxodonta africana*), the African forest elephant (*Loxodonta cyclotis*), and the Asian elephant (*Elephas maximus*). While all elephants are fascinating, each species has unique characteristics.

Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth, with adult males (bulls) of the African bush species standing up to 13 feet tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 14,000 pounds. Their size is complemented by other distinctive features like their long trunks, which are actually elongated noses and upper lips. The trunk is a highly versatile tool used for breathing, drinking, grasping objects, making sounds, and even bathing. Elephants also have large ears that help regulate their body temperature, as blood vessels in the ears release heat.

Their tusks, which are elongated incisor teeth, are another defining characteristic. Tusks are used for digging, lifting objects, and defending themselves. Unfortunately, poaching for ivory has become a major conservation issue, threatening their survival in the wild.
