Shonda Rhimes is getting into the “Only Murders in the Building” and “Knives Out” whodunnit game with her latest series “The Residence.”
Super-producer Rhimes and executive producing partner Betsy Beers reunite with “Scandal” alum Paul William Davies for another White House-set series — except this time, it’s a screwball crime comedy.
Uzo Aduba stars as Cordelia Cupp, a consulting detective for the Metropolitan Police Department, who is tasked with solving a murder. Add in FBI Special Agent Edwin Park (Randall Park) to make a modern-day Sherlock and Watson/”Odd Couple.” While Aduba’s Cupp is known as the most sought-after detective in the world, she and Park don’t see eye to eye: Park is skeptical about Cupp’s unconventional methods, and their dynamic promises to be as intriguing as the mystery they seek to unravel, as the description teases.

The official synopsis reads: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. ‘The Residence’ is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.”

Eliza Coupe, Jane Curtin, Paul Fitzgerald, Barrett Foa, Al Franken, Spencer Garrett, Taran Killam, Julian McMahon, Matt Oberg, Brett Tucker, and Kylie Minogue guest star.
The series is inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s book of the same name.
Paul William Davies (“Scandal,” “For the People”) is the creator, showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Rhimes and Beers also executive produce.
As Susan Kelechi Watson stars in “The Residence,” her fellow former “This Is Us” co-star (and onscreen husband) Sterling K. Brown is leading another White House-centric murder mystery. Brown teamed up again with “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman for “Paradise,” about a Secret Service agent who is accused of killing the President. James Marsden, Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Aliyah Mastin, and Percy Daggs IV co-star.
“The Residence” premieres March 20 on Netflix. Check out the teaser below.
In the first teaser trailer for Netflix’s The Residence series released on Thursday, Uzo Aduba stars as a detective Cordelia Cupp who attempts to solve the case of the dead body that was discovered on the third floor of the White House.

“Mr. President. This house needs to be treated like a crime scene,” Aduba cautions in the trailer. Throughout the teaser, it’s clear chaos is expected to begin as hidden secrets, lingering dangers and political tensions complicate the case with the culprit possibly being a member of the staff or guest.
“There is no place like this place. It is bigger than you,” Aduba’s Cordelia is overheard being told only for her to quip, “Do you mean the house is literally bigger than me? Because that seems obvious.”
The eight-episode series from Shondaland and former Scandal writer and producer Paul William Davies also stars Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jane Curtin, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Al Mitchell and Edwina Findley.

Netflix has released a trailer for The Residence, a Shonda Rhimes TV show that's a murder mystery set within the White House, with plenty of suspects. Rhimes is no stranger to collaborating with Netflix, with her production company, Shondaland, currently producing Bridgerton season 4, as they have for previous seasons of the period drama as well. In 2018, it was announced that Rhimes' company would be involved in producing The Residence, a series for the streaming platform inspired by Kate Andersen Brower's book of the same name.
Now, Netflix has released a new trailer for The Residence, a series starring Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, a member of the Metropolitan Police Department investigating a murder in the White House. The trailer shows Aduba's character interviewing various suspects of the murder, including staff, guests, and even the President himself. The trailer also features plenty of notable actors, including Giancarlo Esposito, Randall Park, and Jason Lee. Action is also teased as Cordelia's investigation causes tensions to run high. Check out the trailer below:

What The Residence Trailer Says About The Murder Mystery Show
Everyone's A Suspect As The Investigation Begins
The trailer promises an eccentric mystery as Cordelia begins interviewing a wide array of characters, all of whom could have had motive for the murder. The many characters emphasize how the series will be an ensemble murder mystery, the setup harkening back to the cast of Glass Onion, who proved such stories with memorable characters make for popular entries on Netflix. Despite pulling clear inspiration from previous work in the genre, the show also maintains a comedic energy that is clearly carried by its lead actor.

The Show Looks Like A Perfect Murder Mystery Drama

Because of the series' eccentric lead character and some hints at comedy, The Residence appears to be the perfect murder mystery show for anyone needing to scratch that Knives Out itch. Since it's from Shondaland, the characters it focuses on are also likely to be intriguing, adding different layers of depth to the story with each episode. With the series coming out in less than two months, it won't be long until the full extent of its mystery becomes ever clearer.

Paul William Davies is the showrunner and executive producer on “The Residence.” Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers executive produce on behalf of Shondaland via the company’s Netflix overall deal. Davies is also under an overall deal at Netflix.
The show marks the latest collaboration between Davies and Rhimes. He previously created the ABC legal drama “For the People,” which was produced by Shondaland. He was also a writer on the hit ABC series “Scandal,” which Rhimes created.
Everyone, put your detective hats on, Shondaland is coming out with a murder mystery, The Residence. Created by Paul William Davies, who has written and executive produced on Scandal, the murder mystery stars Uzo Aduba as detective Cordelia Cupp. Netflix is unveiling a teaser trailer along with a fresh batch of images for the upcoming Netflix series. The Residence will premiere March 20 on the streamer. The cast is a stacked one. Aduba is joined by, but not only by, Randall Park (WandaVision), Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian), Mary Wiseman (Star Trek: Discovery), Susan Kelechi Watson (This is Us), Julian McMahon(Nip/Tuck), Jason Lee (My Name is Earl) and more.
The images released by Netflix set our scene: the state dinner. Everyone (except Jason Lee's Tripp Morgan apparently) is dressed to the nines. Paul Fitzgerald plays President Perry Morgan, who doesn't seem to be in any of the images, suspiciously enough. Aduba in one image is next to the body of our poor murder victim, another with a suave looking Esposito on a phone call, and another with Watson possibly trying to chum up a guest of the state dinner to keep her occupied from the real murder mystery likely going on in the other room.
What Else Has Shondaland Created?
Shondaland is the production company founded by Shonda Rhimes. Rhimes is best known for creating the longstanding medical drama Grey's Anatomy, which is currently in its 21st season. Shondaland is also to thank for its spin-off Private Practice, the political drama Scandal, the legal drama How to Get Away With Murder, and the Catch. The genres that Shondaland has put out are varied, including the recent departure from the drama of the 21st Century and straight into that of Regency Era England. The mind behind Grey's Anatomy is also the mind behind the hit Netflix television series Bridgerton as well as its prequel series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The Regency Era dramas are based on the works and world of Julia Quinn, who wrote eight books, each for a sibling in the wealthy Bridgerton family. The series currently has three seasons available to watch on Netflix now, with the fourth in production.
Now, Shondaland is bringing the 21st Century mystery and drama to Netflix with The Residence. The logline for The Residence is as follows:
"132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous state dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion."
The series premieres on March 20. Check out the trailer below. Stay with Collider for the latest updates.

The White House becomes a crime scene in the first trailer for Netflix's The Residence.
The murder mystery series stars Uzo Aduba as detective Cordelia Cupp, who launches an investigation after a dead body turns up in The White House. The Shondaland production follows the search for a killer in a house of 132 rooms filled with 157 suspects after “a disastrous State dinner.”
“We have no idea who might've been involved in this,” Cordelia says at the start of the preview as she sits down with the President, played by Paul Fitzgerald.
“There's a murderer out there — or in here,” she adds, looking around the room.
The drama is met with a tinge of humor as each character wonders who among them committed the crime.
“Did anything unusual happen?” she asks staffer Jasmine Haney (Susan Kelechi Watson), who sarcastically replies, “Other than my boss dying?”
“Other than that, yes,” Cordelia says.

And as the head of the Secret Service, Colin Trask (Dan Perrault), reminds everyone, “There is no place like this place. It is bigger than you.”
Throughout eight episodes, Cordelia digs deeper into each person in The White House the night of the murder, noting: “This could be someone from the staff, could be a guest, could be anybody.”
A bloody knife sparks interest and tensions run high, with fights, speculation and worry imploding on one of the most famous mansions in the world.
“We're making progress,” Cordelia declares before joking, “I would go so far as to say we're almost done here.”
“Really?” FBI Director Wally Glick (Spencer Garrett) asks hopefully.
“No,” Cordelia responds as the trailer comes to an end.

Early roles
Aduba first garnered recognition for her acting in 2003, when her performance in Translations of Xhosa[12] at the Olney Theatre Center for the Arts earned her a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play.[13] In 2006, she played Amphiarus in The Seven at New York Theatre Workshop and again in 2008 at La Jolla Playhouse. 2013–2019: Orange Is the New Black
Aduba in 2014
In 2013, Aduba began portraying Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren in the Netflix comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black.[20] On being cast, Aduba said:
I auditioned for the show back in late July or early August of [2012]. I had been auditioning that summer for more television and film [after doing much theater]. I'd read a lot of scripts and I remember reading Orange Is the New Black, and it was at the head of the pack. I remember thinking, 'Wow, that is really good, I would love to be a part of that.' I went in and auditioned for another part, and my representatives called me about a month later and they were like, "Hi, we have some really good news. You remember that audition you went on for Orange Is the New Black? You didn't get it." I go, "So… okay, what's the good news?" They said they wanted to offer me another part, Crazy Eyes. I was like, "What in my audition would make someone think I'd be right for a part called Crazy Eyes?" But to be honest, when I got the script for it, it felt like the right fit.[21]
Casting director Jennifer Euston explains the selection of Aduba for the role thus: "Uzo Aduba...had her hair in those knots for the audition...They saw something amazing in her and were able to connect it to what they were looking for in Crazy Eyes."[22] In joining the series, Aduba obtained her Screen Actors Guild card, of which she said, "I was just like, 'Wow, this means I'm a full actress now.' It was such a big deal, and I remember being so thankful and feeling so proud."[23]
Aduba has been recognized for her performance as "Crazy Eyes", winning Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series at the 66th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards and Best Guest Performer in a Comedy Series at the 4th Critics' Choice Television Awards. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film at the 18th Satellite Awards for her season one performance.[24][25][26] Aduba's season two performance earned her the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series at the 21st Screen Actors Guild Awards and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards.[27][28][29]
Aduba won a second Primetime Emmy at the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2015, winning the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. This makes her one of only two actors to win both a drama and comedy Emmy for the same role (the second being Ed Asner).[30] Her performance in the third season also earned another Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series win for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards.[31] Aduba also earned a Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards.[32]
In March 2014, Aduba performed at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS benefit concert Broadway Backwards.[33] She teamed with Rachel Bay Jones for a rendition of the song "Lily's Eyes" from the musical The Secret Garden.[34] In 2015, Aduba played Glinda the Good Witch in the NBC live musical event special The Wiz Live!, receiving positive reviews from critics.[35][36]
Aduba made her film debut in the 2015 musical comedy-drama film Pearly Gates.[37] The next year, she starred alongside Maggie Grace in the comedy-drama Showing Roots, and played supporting roles in Tallulah, Steven Universe, and American Pastoral directed by Ewan McGregor. Aduba played a major role in the 2017 musical animated film My Little Pony: The Movie, voicing Queen Novo, leader of the hippogriffs/seaponies. She co-starred in two Netflix films; Candy Jar in 2018, and Beats in 2019. Also in 2019, Aduba played the title role in the film Miss Virginia.[38][39]
2020–present: Limited series and theatre work
After Orange Is the New Black ended, Aduba was cast as politician Shirley Chisholm in the Hulu miniseries Mrs. America (2020), opposite Cate Blanchett and Sarah Paulson. Chisholm was the first black candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, and the first woman to appear in a United States presidential debate.[40] The miniseries premiered on April 15, 2020, receiving critical acclaim, and Aduba won a Primetime Emmy Award.[41]
She was cast to star opposite Lupita Nyong'o in the ultimately unproduced HBO Max miniseries Americanah written by Danai Gurira.[42] Aduba also was set to star in the fourth season of FX series Fargo, but dropped out due to "some personal family issues".[43][44] Aduba co-starred in the 2020 romantic drama film Really Love.[45] In October 2020, she was cast as therapist Dr. Brooke Taylor in the fourth season of the HBO series In Treatment.[46]
In 2021, Aduba appeared in the Broadway production of the Lynn Nottage play Clyde's, for which she received a Tony Award nomination. In 2023, she starred as Edie Flowers in Netflix's Painkiller, a limited series exploring the reasons behind the Opioid Epidemic in the United States.[47] In February 2023, Netflix announced that Aduba will star in Shonda Rhimes' upcoming White House-set murder mystery series, The Residence.[48]
Advocacy
In April 2017, Aduba received the Point Courage Award from the Point Foundation for her support of the LGBT community.[49]
In June 2018, Aduba became Heifer International's first-ever celebrity ambassador to Africa. She saw Heifer's impact firsthand on 2016 and 2018 field visits to Uganda.[50]
In July 2020, Aduba was announced as a minority investor in a then unnamed Los Angeles team, later unveiled as Angel City FC, that is scheduled to start play in the National Women's Soccer League in 2022.[51]
Personal life
Aduba had a rich personal life from her parents and siblings.[52] In a world where Aduba felt like she was alone, her mother and her culture were her pillars.[19] On September 12, 2021, Aduba announced she had married filmmaker Robert Sweeting in 2020. The couple had a secret ceremony in New York.[53]
On June 11, 2023, Aduba announced she was expecting her first child with Sweeting. She revealed the news at the 2023 Tony Awards.[54] On November 12, 2023, Aduba welcomed a baby named Adaiba Lee Nonyem.[55]
