"It's a workout!" Netflix has unveiled a first look teaser for the upcoming action sequel The Old Guard 2, arriving sometime later in 2025 for streaming. This is a very short 40-sec promo featurette, with nothing but behind-the-scenes shots edited together and no other dialogue besides a few fun quips from Charlize Theron. Some of you may remember the first The Old Guard movie was released on Netflix back in 2020. Go behind the scenes of The Old Guard 2 and get a taste of the insane action coming your way this year — keep your eyes peeled for new faces and one shocking return. Huh. Andy and her team of immortal warriors return to protect humanity from a formidable new enemy who threatens their existence. The Old Guard 2 features Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, Vân Veronica Ngô, with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Uma Thurman, and Henry Golding, too. I was not a fan of the first movie and I'm not sure this one will be any better. We'll see. Stay tuned for the full trailer soon.

The Old Guard 2 Behind-the-Scenes
Andy (Charlize Theron) leads immortal warriors against a powerful enemy threatening their group. They grapple with the resurfacing of a long-lost immortal, complicating their mission to safeguard humanity. The Old Guard 2 is directed by American filmmaker Victoria Mahoney, director of the film Yelling to the Sky, along with many TV series recently (including eps of "I Am the Night", "The Morning Show", "Grey's Anatomy"). The screenplay is written by Greg Rucka. Adapted from the graphic novel The Old Guard from Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández. It's produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Charlize Theron, Beth Kono, AJ Dix, Marc Evans, and Gina Prince-Bythewood. Netflix will release The Old Guard 2 action sequel streaming on Netflix starting sometime later in 2025. Stay tuned for any updates. Look good?
Netflix recently announced that their long-awaited superhero film, The Old Guard 2, will finally premiere on streaming in 2025. As the title implies, this movie is the sequel to 2020's The Old Guard, which follows a group of immortal mercenaries led by Charlize Theron's character, Andy of Scythia, as they are hunted down by those hoping to harness their regenerative abilities. Scoring an 80% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 71% rating from audiences, The Old Guard went on to be one of the most popular movies on streaming in 2020.
Naturally, a sequel to The Old Guard has long been in development, with the first film setting up Andy and her team facing off against another immortal from the former's past. Unfortunately, the production faced multiple delays that put the movie's future into question. Now that Netflix has announced The Old Guard 2's release date, fans can look forward to seeing Andy and the rest of The Old Guard's cast return for the sequel.

The Old Guard 2 Faced Several Obstacles Throughout Its Development
Charlize Theron in The Old Guard
According to Deadline, Netflix announced that The Old Guard 2 was in production back in January 2021. Though director Victoria Mahoney replaced Gina Prince-Bythewood at the helm of this sequel, this change in leadership was hardly the production's biggest issue. When The Old Guard 2 was filming at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, a fire broke out on the set. RTE states that no one was injured, but the incident destroyed the papier-mâché set for The Old Guard 2 and forced everyone to evacuate. This fire disrupted the film's production by two days.

The Old Guard 2: Why The Movie's Release Date Changed, & Reshoots Explained
The Old Guard 2 is the sequel to the 2020 Charlize Theron movie and several production delays have backed up the film’s release schedule.

Principal photography for The Old Guard 2 finished in September 2022. However, the WGA strike and the SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023 halted the completion of reshoots for quite a while. On top of all that, Variety stated that the film's post-production was shut down for five weeks due to another change of leadership within Netflix itself, with Theron revealing this in July 2024. Though making sequel movies usually takes between two and four years, The Old Guard 2 had more than its fair share of setbacks.

When Netflix announced its 2025 film slate, the streaming giant revealed that The Old Guard 2 would premiere on July 2. This release date is roughly a week shy of the original film's five-year anniversary. Not only that, but its date ensures that The Old Guard 2 will have a big summer opening, as many subscribers should have enough time over the sunny season to enjoy this new superhero movie on streaming.

The Old Guard 2 Can Be Better By Answering Mythology Questions
The Old Guard 2 needs to do a better job explaining the mythology and immortal world of Charlize Theron's new potential Netflix franchise.
The Old Guard experienced great success thanks to its premiere in July 2020. Variety reported that 78 million households viewed the movie by October 2020, making The Old Guard the seventh most-watched SVOD film of the year. It's unknown if The Old Guard 2 will achieve the same number of viewers, but the movie should benefit as the sequel to a popular IP on a still widely-used streaming platform.
What To Expect From The Old Guard 2
The Old Guard Has Already Set Up Andy's Next Big Battle
According to Variety, The Old Guard will follow Andy of Scythia as she faces a "formidable new enemy." While this is a generic logline for a sequel, the original Old Guard film seems to have already introduced the franchise's next villain. Specifically, the film's post-credits scene depicts the exiled Booker finding an unexpected guest in his apartment: Quŷnh. This immortal was Andy's first partner, who was accused of witchcraft, trapped in an iron maiden, and dropped in the sea, where she had been forced to drown for 500 years.

The Old Guard 2: Who Will Win The Sequel’s Inevitable Andy v Quynh Fight?
Who wins a fight between Andy and Quynh in The Old Guard 2? Here's the case for each character in Gina Prince-Bythewood's inevitable Netflix sequel.
It is very likely that Quýnh will be the villain of The Old Guard 2, given that her comic book counterpart, Noriko, turned to a life of crime after being forced to drown for years and returning to civilization. In the comics, Noriko develops a grudge against Andy and the entire human race for "wronging" her, so Quýnh will likely want to get even in the film as well. Likewise, Andy and Noriko were shown to have had a romantic relationship before their separation in the comics, so The Old Guard 2 will likely feature glimpses into their past love life together, creating greater emotional tension.
With Quýnh gearing up to be the main antagonist, The Old Guard 2 seems like it will be the franchise's biggest, most emotional film yet.
All in all, The Old Guard 2 faced a difficult production, but the original film has proven that the sequel will be worth the wait once it drops on Netflix on July 2, 2025. Just like the first movie, the second should be another superhero success story for Netflix, as it seems set to premiere in July as another summer blockbuster on streaming. With Quýnh gearing up to be the main antagonist, The Old Guard 2 seems like it will be the franchise's biggest, most emotional film yet.

The Old Guard 2 now finally has a release date as Netflix releases a new behind-the-scenes teaser for the film. Released in 2020, The Old Guard is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, with Charlize Theron starring as Andy, the leader of a team of immortal mercenaries who embark on a mission for revenge. A sequel was confirmed to be in the works with director Victoria Mahoney after the first installment was a viewership hit, but The Old Guard 2's release date has been repeatedly delayed due to reshoots and a regime change at Netflix.
Now, after years of uncertainty, Netflix confirms that The Old Guard 2 will release on July 2, 2025. The announcement from the streamer confirms that the sequel will feature "insane action," in addition to some exciting new cast members and "one shocking return." Accompanying the announcement, Netflix released a new behind-the-scenes video, which provides a look at some of what's to come. The video features Theron doing some of her own stunts, including engaging in a knife fight and hanging off the side of a helicopter. Check it out below:
The Old Guard is an adaptation of the graphic novel series of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández.
What The Old Guard 2's Release Date Means For The Franchise
Will The Delay Hurt The Film?
Andy (Charlize Theron) grabbing an axe in The Old Guard
Principal photography for The Old Guard 2 was reportedly completed back in 2022. A leadership change at Netflix shortly into post-production on the sequel was ultimately a major factor in delaying the project, but the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023 also hampered the ability to complete reshoots. The release date confirmation means The Old Guard 2 delays are now in the rear-view mirror, however, and there's no danger of the movie being shelved.

Charlize Theron's Upcoming Action Sequel Can Be Her True Furiosa Replacement
The upcoming sequel to The Old Guard could replace Furiosa as a potential franchise for Charlize Theron, cementing her clout as an action star.
Whether audiences are still interested in the sequel, however, remains to be seen. Even with The Old Guard's ending setting up a follow-up adventure, five years is a considerable amount of time to wait for a new movie. The first movie, however, earned an 80% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 71% audience score, meaning it was generally well-received in addition to being a viewership success. This all bodes well for the sequel to be a similar caliber of win for Netflix.
Our Take On The Old Guard 2's Release Date
The Netflix Sequel Could Be Worth The Wait
Andy (Charlize Theron) and Nile (KiKi Layne) fighting inside an airplane in The Old Guard
After projects like Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Atomic Blonde (2017), and The Old Guard, Theron is undeniably one of this generation's premiere action stars. With The Old Guard 2's cast set to include Uma Thurman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Henry Golding, Marwan Kenzari, and Matthias Schoenaerts, she'll be in good company for the sequel. If the upcoming movie can deliver when it comes to action while expanding the mythology of the first film, the franchise could potentially further expand.
Franchise producer Marc Evans told Variety in May 2023, that the ending to the upcoming sequel "demands" that The Old Guard 3 happens. It's possible that the lengthy experience of bringing the latest installment to life will affect how willing the cast and creatives are to making a third installment. If The Old Guard 2 is a hit, however, it's certainly looking possible that Theron's Andy will return for another adventure.
Netflix has spent all morning previewing their 2025 slate of originals, and we’ve learned that the five-years-later sequel The Old Guard 2 is headed to streaming this summer.
The Old Guard 2 premieres on Netflix on July 2, 2025.
Charlize Theron will be back in The Old Guard 2, with Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) and Henry Golding (Snake Eyes) joining a cast that also includes KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Victoria Mahoney is taking over the reins as director of the sequel.
Based on the graphic novel series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, director Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s The Old Guard originally debuted on Netflix on July 10th, 2020.
Theron stars as a warrior named Andy, leader of a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die who have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries.
But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.
In this year’s sequel, “Andromache of Scythia and her band of soldiers are back in this second story chronicling the battles and burdens of their dubious immortality. Nile’s addition to the team has given them new purpose and new direction, but when you’ve got 6,000 years of history at your back, the past is always ready to return—with a vengeance.”
The first film’s director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, is staying on board as producer.
Fans of The Old Guard will be pleased to learn that Netflix has finally set the release date for its long-awaited sequel. Starring Charlize Theron in the lead role, the 2020 original adapted Greg Rucka's comic book of the same name and debuted to positive critical and audience reception.
Per Netflix, The Old Guard 2 will premiere on the platform this summer on July 2. Franchise creator Rucka returns to pen the script of the eagerly anticipated sequel that will again follow Theron's character, Andromache 'Andy' of Scythia, as she confronts a formidable new enemy. Victoria Mahoney replaces Gina Prince-Bythewood in the director's chair for The Old Guard 2, which also stars Uma Thurman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, KiKi Layne, Marzan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Henry Golding.

Netflix shares big news about the anticipated release of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
The release date announcement follows Theron's update last year regarding the long-gestating follow-up film, explaining why the project has taken so long to see the light of day. Due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, The Old Guard 2's post-production process faced multiple issues. “Netflix went through quite a changeover,” she said. “We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it."
The Mad Max: Fury Road and Fast X actor, however, insisted that the movie would eventually premiere and that she was excited to share The Old Guard 2 with fans. "They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up, and I'm really excited about it," she said. “It’s really good. It's a really important film for us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie."

Development
In July 2020, Greg Rucka said, "In case of sequel, break glass. It's very straightforward. You want another one? Here's a way to get into it".[1] In the same month, Charlize Theron had expressed her interest in a second film, saying: "Let's have a little resting period, but just given the fact that all of us really want to do it, I'm sure when it's the right time, we'll start the conversation."[2][3]
It was reported on January 27, 2021, that Netflix had greenlit a sequel.[4] On August 26, it was announced that Victoria Mahoney would replace Gina Prince-Bythewood as director for the sequel. Theron, KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, Vân Veronica Ngô, and Chiwetel Ejiofor were cast to reprise their respective roles from the first film.[4] In June 2022, Uma Thurman and Henry Golding were cast in undisclosed roles, while Greg Rucka was confirmed to have written the script for producers David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Theron, Beth Kono, AJ Dix, Marc Evans, and Prince-Bythewood.[5]
Filming
Principal photography began in June 2022 in Italy.[6] Some filming took place at the Italian Cinecittà Studios. In August 2022, the film's set caught fire while it was being dismantled, causing production to be delayed.[7][8] Additional filming took place in the United Kingdom. Filming was completed in September 2022.[6]
Post-production
In July 2024, Theron said that the film was shut down five weeks into its post-production due to regime changes at Netflix, but has since been completed and will be released "soon".[9] In August 2024, the Union of British Columbia Performers listed the film as being scheduled for two weeks of additional photography from October 7 to October 18, 2024.[10] Matthew Schmidt serves as the editor.[11]
Music
By January 2023, Max Aruj and Ruth Barrett were set to compose the film, replacing Volker Bertelmann and Dustin O'Halloran who did the music for the first film.[12]
Release
The Old Guard 2 is scheduled to be released on Netflix on July 2, 2025.[13]

The Old Guard is a 2020 American superhero film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Greg Rucka, based on his comic book of the same name. It stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor, and follows a team of immortal mercenaries on a revenge mission.
It was released on July 10, 2020, on Netflix. It received generally positive reviews, with praise for its action sequences and Theron's performance. A sequel, The Old Guard 2, is in production with Victoria Mahoney directing.[5][6]
Plot
Andromache "Andy" of Scythia, Booker, Joe, and Nicky are millenia-old warriors with unexplained regenerative healing abilities who use their vast experience to work as mercenaries, taking missions to help people. They accept a job from former CIA operative James Copley to rescue a group of kidnapped girls in South Sudan, breaking their rule of never working for the same employer twice.
The mission proves to be a ruse, and they are ambushed and killed. They realize that Copley set them up to remotely film their regeneration after quickly recovering and killing their attackers.
Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, U.S. Marine Nile Freeman is killed by having her throat slit while taking down a military target during a house search, but recovers and heals without a scratch. Later, she shares a disturbing dream with the other immortals, who are then alerted to her existence, as they experience dreams of any new immortals until found. Andy tracks down a confused Nile and extracts her from Afghanistan before military personnel can transfer her for further testing.
Copley shows the video of the ambush to pharmaceutical executive Steven Merrick, who sends operatives to capture the team. Andy brings Nile to a safe house in France, where she meets Booker, Joe, and Nicky.
The group shares some of their past and reveals that they are not fully immortal: their ability to heal eventually stops without warning. They share that this happened to a previous immortal, Lykon. That night, Nile dreams about repeatedly drowning in an iron maiden. When she shares her dream with the others they tell her about Quynh, the first immortal aside from herself that Andy's found, who was sentenced for witchcraft and cast into the sea in an iron maiden approximately 500 years previously. The other immortals have been unable to locate her, and she has been continuously drowning ever since.
The group is soon ambushed by Merrick's forces. Joe and Nicky are captured while a seemingly deceased Booker is left behind. Upon discovering the attack, Andy kills all of the remaining assailants while Booker recuperates, but she's mildly wounded and realizes she isn't healing. She hides this from Booker and Nile. Booker locates Copley, and Nile separates from the group to reunite with her family.
Meanwhile, Joe and Nicky are transported to Merrick Pharmaceutical's headquarters in London. The paramilitary forces that are guarding them attack them when they kiss each other in the transport van, and Joe and Nicky kill all the paramilitaries in the back of the van with them off-screen, but do not escape the van. They are transported to Merrick's headquarters, where they are strapped down and tortured in the lab to observe their regeneration and take tissue samples.
Andy and Booker confront Copley, but Booker betrays Andy and shoots her, arguing that Merrick might find a way to end the immortality they have both grown weary of. Booker realizes that Andy is not healing as they are captured. Simultaneously, Nile discovers evidence that Booker sold out the group, but she arrives too late to intervene. Booker and Andy are brought to Merrick Pharmaceuticals and are both strapped down beside Joe and Nicky.
Copley has a change of heart when he sees that Merrick is primarily motivated by greed and sadism, not medical advancement, and is planning to kill Andy and torture all of them indefinitely, primarily to prevent rival pharmaceutical companies from discovering proprietary trade secrets. Later, Nile confronts Copley and he agrees to assist her in a rescue mission.
With Copley's help locating them, Nile storms Merrick's London headquarters and frees the four other group members. They fight their way out through the rest of Merrick's security, culminating in Nile killing Merrick by grabbing him and jumping out of a window. All five of them, including the no-longer-immortal Andy, make it out.
The group sentences Booker to loneliness as punishment for his betrayal, and forbids him from contacting them for 100 years. Booker and Andy say goodbye to each other. Andy, Nicky, Joe, and Nile meet with Copley, who explains how his research revealed their past missions had a greater effect than they ever knew, including how the descendants of people they had rescued went on to help the world in many different ways. They task Copley with the job of using his skills and job with the CIA to cover their tracks going forward, and with assisting to position them into roles where they will have the largest positive impact.
In an epilogue set six months later in Paris, a depressed and drunken Booker stumbles into his apartment to find Quynh waiting for him.

Development
In March 2017, Skydance Media obtained the rights to adapt the comic The Old Guard, written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez, into a film.[7] Rucka's contract stipulated that a major scene highlighting the romance between the characters Joe and Nicky from the book had to be kept in the film adaptation.[8]
In July 2018, they hired Gina Prince-Bythewood to direct with Rucka adapting his book to screenplay and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger producing.[9] With a budget of about $70 million, Prince-Bythewood became the first black woman to direct a big-budget comic book film.[3] In March 2019, Netflix obtained worldwide rights to the film and agreed to finance it with Skydance. Charlize Theron joined the film and also produced with Beth Kono, A.J. Dix, Marc Evans and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger.[10]
KiKi Layne was confirmed to star in the film after Netflix picked up the rights. In May 2019, Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Luca Marinelli joined the cast.[11][12] In June 2019, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harry Melling and Veronica Ngo joined the cast.[13] At Ngo's request, details of her character were changed from the comic book. In an interview, Rucka said, "When Veronica was cast, she said I'm not Japanese, I'm Vietnamese. [Director Gina Prince-Bythewood] reached out to me and said 'Can we accommodate that?' and I was like, 'Absolutely.' [...] Noriko becomes Quynh, Quynh is now Vietnamese. It really was as simple as wanting to honor that, and be respectful of that".[14] The other change to the character was the character's death. "In the comic, Quynh/Noriko is washed overboard during a storm rather than deliberately drowned. According to Rucka, that was partially a logistical change to save money. [...] But Quynh’s new 'death,' solidified by Prince-Bythewood’s suggestion of the iron maiden imagery, served an important narrative and tonal role as well".[14]
Filming
Filming at Bourne Wood in Surrey during August 2019
Principal photography began in Europe in mid-May 2019.[15][16] Filming took place in Morocco and the United Kingdom, including at Shepperton Studios in England.[17] Sandwich in Kent was used for the French town Goussainville. Sandwich's Discovery Park doubled as Merrick Pharmaceutical headquarters.[18] Filming in the famous pub Prospect of Whitby took place on July 10, 2019.[19]
Volker Bertelmann and Dustin O'Halloran composed the film's score. Lakeshore Records released the soundtrack on July 10, 2020, coinciding with the film's streaming release.[20]
Release
The Old Guard was released on July 10, 2020 on Netflix.[21] It was the top-streamed item on the site over its first weekend.[22] It ranked second and fourth the following two weekends.[23][24]
On July 17, Netflix reported the film was on pace to be viewed by 72 million households over its first four weeks, among the top 10 most-successful original launches in the platform's history.[25] That October, Netflix reported the actual figure to have been 78 million.[26][27] In November, Variety reported the film was the seventh-most watched straight-to-streaming title of 2020 up to that point.[28][27] In December, The A.V. Club reported that due to "the way Netflix operates, we don't even know whether The Old Guard is a hit in any measurable sense. Netflix itself claims that 78 million households have watched it, and I have no idea whether that's a good number".[27]
Reception
Critical response
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 80% based on 285 reviews, with an average rating of 6.5/10. The site's critics consensus reads: "The Old Guard is occasionally restricted by genre conventions, but director Gina Prince-Bythewood brings a sophisticated vision to the superhero genre - and some knockout action sequences led by Charlize Theron."[29] At Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 70 out of 100, based on 45 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[30]
Kate Erbland of IndieWire gave the film a "B+" and said: "Steeped in hand-to-hand action... but with enough ballistic firepower to kit out a small civil war, every action sequence is more than awe-inspiring; they're necessary to the film itself. Superhero battles that are eye popping and narratively motivated? Oh, yeah."[31] Owen Gleiberman of Variety called the film a "watchable franchise wannabe" and wrote: "Chunks of the picture are logy and formulaic (it dawdles on for two hours), but the director, Gina Prince-Bythewood (making a major lane change after Love & Basketball and The Secret Life of Bees), stages the fight scenes with ripe executionary finesse, and she teases out a certain soulful quality in her cast."[32] Bob Chipman of The Escapist gave the film 7 out of 10 and said: "This is a clever, slick, progressive minded, yet also brutally violent, frequently kick ass action film" and that "they clearly want it to be a franchise, I'd certainly watch another one."[33] Tom Breihan, for The A.V. Club, wrote, "The Old Guard is a superhero story; it’s just one of the many superhero stories that attempts to subvert superhero stories. [...] Though The Old Guard tackles superhero-movie clichés in interesting ways, it has more difficulty with the emerging conventions of the Netflix movie".[27]
The film's portrayal of LGBT characters within the superhero genre was praised. Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast said that The Old Guard "is the first movie with out gay superheroes, or the extremely (extremely) rare action film to feature queer characters and acknowledge their romance. [...] The sexuality of the characters is matter-of-fact and inconsequential to their ability to kick total-and-complete ass, yet also given the dignity of expressing and showing their love".[34] Benjamin Lee, for The Guardian, wrote that "in 2020, it really shouldn't be such a big deal, but watching a form of unfettered queer love exist within the confines of a fantastical comic book adaptation, aimed at a wide audience, felt major to me."[35] Anna Menta of Decider wrote:
"I hadn't read The Old Guard comic, and I didn't know that writer Greg Rucka had stipulated in his contract that, whenever or however the film got made, it had to include that scene. So when it happened, well, it felt—and still does feel—like a huge freakin' deal. [...] It's just as passionate, just as charged, and just as sensual as Han and Leia, Peter and MJ, Peeta and Katniss, or any other heterosexual couple who's had a big kiss moment in an action movie over the years".[36]

Sequel
Main article: The Old Guard 2
On the coda preceding The Old Guard's credits, Rucka said, "In case of sequel, break glass. It's very straightforward. You want another one? Here's a way to get into it".[14] A sequel to the original graphic novel, The Old Guard: Force Multiplied, was published in 2019.[14] Theron has expressed her interest in a second film, saying: "Let's have a little resting period, but just given the fact that all of us really want to do it, I'm sure when it's the right time, we'll start the conversation."[25][49]
It was reported on January 27, 2021 that Netflix had greenlit a sequel.[50] On August 26, it was announced that Victoria Mahoney would replace Prince-Bythewood as director for the sequel. Theron, Layne, Schoenaerts, Kenzari, Marinelli, Ngo, and Ejiofor will reprise their roles from the first movie.[51] In June 2022, Uma Thurman and Henry Golding were cast in undisclosed roles.[52] At least part of the film was shot at the Italian Cinecittà Studios, with a fire in August 2022 causing temporary disruption to filming.[53][54]
