Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Forty-Seven.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Romero.

The Master of Shadows.

The torches flooded Kurg-the-chief's corpse with light.
Once again, Gao-the-sorcerer cast one of those incantations that so irritated the son of Crao.

Sail in peace to the "Territory of Shadows", Kurg!
Gao will make you Come back to us whenever you desire!

No one has ever returned from the "Kingdom of the Dead"!
Gao deceives his people by pretending to be the master of shadows!

The son of Crao had been living among this welcoming clan for several days.
The forest is full of game and we are happy there, "Hair of Fire"!
We do not even have to fear death since Gao can snatch us from the "Shadow Realm"!
Hum.

Page Two.

Rahan has seen too many sorcerers lie to preserve their authority over their clan!
He does not believe in Gao's supernatural power!

Do not blaspheme brother!
We have seen Gao revive the dead before! The whole clan can testify to that!
Attention!

The hunt ended tragically that day.

Ra-ha-ha!
Rahan's bold intervention had not been able to prevent the tragedy.
Kurg had been disemboweled by the pachyderm.

And that is why that night the whole clan mourned their leader.
Wrapped in a shroud of skin, Kurg's body was, according to custom, thrown into a nearby ravine.

Gao cannot revive the dead! Rahan will never believe such a thing!
The son of Crao fell asleep with this thought.

Page Three.

It was in the middle of the night that a clamor tore him from his dreams.
Rahan was confused.
Kurg has returned from the "Shadow Territory"! Kurg has returned!

This. This. This is incredible!
Rahan must still be dreaming!
Draped in a cloak and brandishing a torch, Kurg-the-Chief stood on a hill overlooking the village.

Gao-the-sorcerer stood impassively in front of his hut.
It was only to convince "Fire-Hair" that I brought Kurg back from the "Shadow Realm"!

Thank you for obeying Me, Kurg!
I do not need you anymore. You can go back to the shadows!
On a hillock, Kurg waved his torch one last time before disappearing.

So, "Fire-Hair".
Do you still doubt my power?

The sorcerer looked down with contempt at the son of Crao, who was returning to his hut, terrified by what he had just seen.
Oh, Rahan has lost his reason!
He had to yield to the evidence. The hunter with the torch was definitely Kurg-the-Chief!
Page Four.

Or he drank too much of that drink! No. That is not it. Since the others saw it too!

Rahan quickly sank into a deep sleep filled with horrible nightmares.
No! No! This is not possible!

He saw Gao commanding a horde of dead.
And this terrible horde assailed him from all sides.
And these dead men knocked him down, felt his body, tore the skin from his face.

No!
It was his own scream that tore him from this nightmare.
Outside everything was peaceful and the sun was already high.

It is impossible that Rahan slept that long!
They wanted to drug him.
But who?
And why?

Page Five.

But Rahan was not drugged when he saw Kurg-the-Chief on that hill!
Still haunted by the vision of the living dead, he constructed all the hypotheses.

Kurg's wound may not have been fatal.
Perhaps Kurg and Gao colluded to mystify the Clan?
Rahan wants to know!

The son of Crao thought he would slip away discreetly.
He was wrong.
Hum. “Hair of Fire” seems very concerned! We must know his intentions, Targha!
I will take care of it, father!

Shortly after Rahan descended the ravine, where Kurg-the-chief had been thrown.
Hum. He. He is still here!

Shrouds of skin lay here and there at the bottom of the ravine.
Rahan recognized that of the chief.
He. Maybe he contains another hunter than Kurg?

His emotion was great when, with a blow of his knife, he split the shroud.
Oh!
The corpse was indeed that of Kurg-the-Chief!
Page Six.

How could Kurg be both on the mound and at the bottom of this ravine, wrapped in a shroud?

This mystery was beyond the understanding of the son of Crao.
He was prostrate at the foot of the clay wall, when.
This way! This way! "Fire hair" has desecrated the "Ravine of the Dead"!

A moment later, the crest of the ravine bristled with hunters.
Gao-the-sorcerer was at their head.
The desecrator must pay for this sacrilege with his life!

The first lances whistled, narrowly missing the son of Crao.
Zlac! Zlac!

He could not climb the clay wall without becoming an easy target.
Zlac!
Rahan will not escape them for long!

Ha-ha-ha!
"Fire-hair" is like a wild animal caught in a trap!

Page Seven.

They will persist until they have killed Rahan! Rahan will die in this trap! Unless. Unless.

A howl of pain suddenly rose up.
The son of Crao, staggering, tried to tear out the spear that seemed to pierce his stomach!
Argh!

He failed and collapsed with a rattle.
Ra-ha-ha!
The desecrator is punished! His remains will feed the "Crooked Beaks"!

Rahan heard the hunters retreat. He smiled mischievously.
Rahan's trick worked! They did not imagine for a moment that Rahan was deceiving them!

By pretending that he had been hit by this spear caught in flight, Rahan had taken a big risk.
But this audacity had saved him!

He waited until nightfall to emerge from the ravine.
Gao-the-sorcerer harangued the clan.
"Fire-Hair" is dead! His shadow now belongs to your wizard! Look!
Rahan was confused.

Page Eight.

Rahan thought he was dreaming again.
The man who emerged from the forest, brandishing a torch, was none other. Than himself!
Rahan is going crazy!
How can he be here, and on the other side of the clearing at the same time!?

Do you finally recognize my power, Rahan?!
I recognize your power, O Gao! Shadow among shadows, I will henceforth be your slave!

The son of Crao came out of his stupor. He saw his "Double" disappear into the forest.
Rahan will know where this "living dead" who stole his face is going!

Hum. The clan probably does not know about this cave!

Oh! Rahan understands!
The "Undead" had just torn off his terracotta mask.
The impostor was none other than Targha, the son of Gao-the sorcerer!

So, it is with these clay masks that your father and you are abusing the clan!?
You. So you are not. Not dead!
Targha, in turn, knew confusion!

Page Nine.

Other masks were lined up in the shadows. That of Kurg-the-chief. That of Gao-the-sorcerer.
Himself.
The clan will not forgive your father for cheating on them!

The clan will never know, "Fire-Hair". Because you will die!
Targha rushed for a spear.

Zlac!
Which he did not have time to grasp!
Argh!

And now, Targha, you will tell Rahan why you and your father have imagined this ignoble deception!
Do not kill me! You. You will know everything!

The sun was rising when Rahan reappeared at the clan, pushing ahead of him. Gao-the-sorcerer!
Hum!
A clamor arose because the sorcerer was also among the hunters!

The clamor redoubled as Rahan tore the mask off his captive.
Look brothers! It is with "Faces of earth" that the so-called master of shadows deceives you!

Page Ten.

Gao and Targha stole Kurg-the-Chief's face!
They drugged Rahan to take a clay mold of his face!

And it was with these masks that Gao made you believe that he reigned over the "Kingdom of Shadows"!
It was with this deception that he ensured his power over your clan!
He would soon have imposed Targha as your leader!

Since you have managed to unmask these scoundrels, it is up to you to decide their fate, Rahan!
The sorcerer and his son, overwhelmed, did not protest.
Their silence was a confession!

Unmask. Never had a word been so rightly used.
A hunter, even the best, does not have to decide alone!
It is the whole clan that must decide!

And the clan decided. Some demanded death.
Others, more numerous, demanded for the one who had claimed to be the "Master of Shadows", lifelong banishment.
The son of Crao was one of them.
