Republican President Donald Trump also ordered the suspension of the Safe Mobility Program, which allowed refugee citizens, including Nicaraguans in other countries, to resettle in the United States.
Under the order, the Secretary of Homeland Security will suspend decisions on refugee status applications until a conclusion is reached for the next 90 days, beginning with the order.
The Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security must submit a report to the President in the coming months to conclude whether the continuity of the Refugee Admission Program is beneficial to the United States.
However, the same order establishes exceptions, and clarifies that the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security may jointly determine to admit aliens into the United States as refugees on a case-by-case basis, in their discretion, but only so long as they determine that the entry of such aliens as refugees is in the national interest and does not pose a threat to the security or well-being of the United States.
