The fact that the numbers have not really changed shows that the LORD was truly to be the one to trust, not the manpower, not the numbers.GOD reminds Moses and Eleazar of the previous generation that had died in the wilderness due to their disobedience, with only Caleb and Joshua remaining.
27:1-3, The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah (notice the last syllable). We discussed that last time. They (the daughters) came forward and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons.
These five daughters came to Moses, Eleazar, the tribal leaders, and the congregation at the door of the tent of meeting, the place where judgments were issued, with a request and a proposal.
Since their father had died without sons, in order that his name not be lost from membership in the clan and a piece of the land inheritance, these daughters proposed that they be allowed to inherit their father’s portion of land in Canaan, in the promised land.
This request was unprecedented; therefore, Moses took the matter before Yahweh, and the LORD GOD decided in favor of the women, allowing that, in the case of a father who died without sons, the daughter(s) could inherit the family property.
This did not apply to a daughter who married outside her tribe, which would cancel the purpose of the LORD’s intent of keeping n to keep land within the various clans and tribes.In the time of a new generation that was about to go into the land the LORD GOD promised, there was a division of that land among the tribes.
Like the sabbatical years, like the shmita year, the jubilee is one in which no agricultural work is to be done and the land is to rest. The people were to rest as the land was to rest.
LEV 25:9-10, Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan.
