An interracial romance threads through Dana's past and present, and the clock is ticking as she struggles to confront secrets she never knew ran through her blood. Joining Mallori Johnson in the cast of Kindred are Micah Stock, Ryan Kwanten, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, and David Alexander Kaplan.
Kindred premieres on Hulu on December 13th.
The first teaser for FX‘s “Kindred,” a series adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s acclaimed novel set to release exclusively on Hulu, has been released.
First published in 1979, “Kindred” focuses on Dana James, a young Black aspiring writer living in Los Angeles with her husband Kevin Franklin. While in the process of moving, Dana abruptly finds herself tossed between the modern day and 1815 Maryland during the Antebellum period of the South. During her journeys to the past, she struggles to survive while trapped at a plantation owned by the wealthy Weylin family and ends up uncovering shocking secrets about her own family history. The book received critical acclaim upon its release, went on to become a bestseller, and has since become a frequent high school and college class selection.

The TV adaptation of “Kindred” stars Mallori Johnson as Dana and Micah Stock as Kevin, with Ryan Kwanten, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, David Alexander Kaplan, Sophina Brown, and Sheria Irving rounding out the cast. The series was developed for television by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, a playwright whose works “Gloria” and “Everybody” were selected as finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. In TV, he has worked as a consulting producer on HBO’s “Watchmen” series and Amazon Prime Video’s “Outer Range.”
Jacobs-Jenkins executive produces with “The Americans” creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, Courtney Lee-Mitchell, Jules Jackson, and filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel for Protozoa Pictures. “Zola” director Janicza Bravo executive produced and helmed the pilot. The series is produced by FX Productions.
This is the first screen adaptation of any of Butler’s work. The author, who published her first stories in the ’70s and died in 2006, was one of the most acclaimed science fiction writers of her era and one of the most prominent Black authors working in the genre. Over the course of her career, she won several Hugo Awards and Nebula Awards and made history as the first sci-fi writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. Aside from “Kindred,” she’s also known for the 2005 vampire novel “Fledging” and the “Patternist,” “Lilith’s Brood,” and “Parable” series.
All eight episodes of “Kindred” Season 1 will premiere December 13 on Hulu. Watch the full trailer below.
Octavia E. Butler's 1979 Kindred was a transcendent science-fiction novel, following Dana, a young Black writer who time travels from 1970s Los Angeles to 19th century Maryland. The literary offering was lauded for its exploration of time, history, and ancestry.
Decades after the success of Butler's novel comes an FX-ordered series, created by showrunner and writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkin. Staying close to its original material, Kindred stars Mallori Johnson as Dana, who faces past secrets seeping into the present. The show also stars Micah Stock, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, David Alexander Kaplan, Sophina Brown, and Sheria Irving.
"The thing I’m always fighting to remind people is that this is a literary event," Jacobs-Jenkins told Vanity Fair about Kindred. "It’s an American classic".
The series will consist of eight episodes, with a first trailer having arrived this week. The tone is taut, thrilling, and terrifying — sure to keep viewers glued.
Kindred arrives on Hulu on Dec. 13.
The trailer for Kindred teases a terrifying take on Octavia Bulter's time travel classic. First released in 1979, Butler's novel focuses on Dana James. A hopeful Black writer living in Los Angeles with her husband, Dana finds herself abruptly moving between her modern times and 1815 Maryland during the Antebellum period of the South. The book received widespread praise upon its debut, becoming a best-seller, and has been required reading for many over the course of the past several decades.
The teaser trailer for the Kindred adaptation has now been unveiled. The trailer, which confirms that all the show's eight episodes will debut December 13 via FX On Hulu, leans into the horror elements of the story and shows how it would feel to be ripped away from your life and sent back to a dangerous time with no explanation of why that was happening. What To Expect From The Kindred Adaptation
Kindred on Hulu
Following along the lines of the novel on which it is based, Kindred will see Dana (Mallori Johnson) moving between two very different worlds. She finds herself at a plantation in the 19th century, a place intimately connected to Dana and her family. A romance connects the past and present, with the clock ticking for Dana as she struggles to find the truth behind the secrets that run through her blood. Along with Johnson, who was recently seen in the Apple TV+ documentary drama WeCrashed, the adaptation also stars Ryan Kwanten, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, David Alexander Kaplan, Sophina Brown, and Sheria Irving. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, an award-winning playwright and Pulitzer Prize Finalist will serve as showrunner on the project.
Kindred will mark the first time that any of Butler's work has been adapted. The author, who began publishing in the 1970s and passed away in 2006, was among the most acclaimed sci-fi writers of her era. She'd won several awards, including making history as the first sci-fi writer to receive the MacArthur Fellowship. Given her popular body of work, more adaptations will come to follow.
With that kind of legacy, there is understandably a lot of interest in terms of what one of her most memorable stories will look like when it's transformed into a prestigious drama. And although this latest teaser trailer leans into horror, Butler's saga had a lot to say about love, destiny, and the sins of the past. If the Hulu series can effectively tap into all of that, Kindred will be well worth watching.
Science fiction novels are no strangers to the screen, and Kindred is the latest adaptation from FX. The 8-episode first season is a doorway to Octavia E. Butler's seminal work of fiction, updating her story from the 1970s to the 2010s but still reflecting back on the slavery-ridden past that defines a significant portion of United States history. The time-traveling narrative centers on a young Black woman who finds herself ripped from her own time and thrown into an Antebellum plantation where she must pass herself off as a slave. As she travels between the two points without understanding why, she soon learns her the plantation in question is connected to her family.
Mallori Johnson anchors Kindred as the aspiring writer and emerging time traveler Dana James, and she is surrounded by a cast that is equally up to the task. She meets several fascinating characters in her journey through the years, all of whom give her a better understanding of who she is and where she comes from. Sarah (played by Sophina Brown) is the Wylin family's cook, who remains enslaved as she fights to protect her daughter, and Luke is a fellow slave who seeks to help Dana while resisting his cruel master. Sheria Irving, meanwhile, plays new character Olivia—whose story is key to unlocking Dana's family secrets.

Kindred Trailer Proves Octavia Butler’s Time Travel Adaptation Is Terrifying
Screen Rant spoke to Brown, Irving and Smith about their multifaceted characters and how they felt about Kindred's adaptation, as well as where they would travel to if they had to choose.
Sheria Irving, Sophina Brown & Austin Smith on Kindred
sheria irving in kindred episode 3
Screen Rant: Austin, I know that you were already a fan of Octavia Butler's novel, but what really spoke to you about this script and Branden’s interpretation of it?
Austin Smith: The way that he so perfectly sets up the premise of the show, and also the way he made these characters so real; so fully fleshed out for an audience that has not read the book. Also, he honors the source material so well that I think even fans of the book will recognize these people as the characters that they love from the book.
The characters all have such depth, and the way he's playing with so many genres was just so exciting. I just think he's one of our greatest writers. So, all of that was really, really exciting.
Sheria, Olivia is one of the newer aspects of the series. Can you talk about how you find your way into her character and the position that she's in right now?
Sheria Irving: Yeah, it's so cool to be playing a character that's outside of the novel. And Branden Jacobs-Jenkins does such a wonderful job of taking care of this character and giving her space to bloom during this series.
What I will say is that Olivia is Dana's long-lost mother. Spoiler alert! She too is a time traveler, so she was a modern-day woman in the 90s trapped in American slavery in the 1800s. It's been a really interesting journey, finding my way into this character. I read the book and fell in love with the other characters, and I think what I tried to do was make her a fully fleshed-out, real 3D human to honor the legacy of women like her who came before me.
Sophina, I think Sarah is such a fascinating character. She's in closest proximity to the Weylins all the time and in that house with them, but she has to live with them and put up with them, for the sake of not only herself but for her child. Can you talk about her constant struggle?
Sophina Brown: Yes, I think that's one of the most interesting things about taking on the role. It opened up my perspective in terms of the options that enslaved people had; to really realize that just because I chose as Sarah, not to run and not to fight. My choice was still valid, and it still had so much dignity and integrity behind it, because I choose to work the system, so to speak. And I choose to really lean on white proximity, in terms of trying to make a way for my children.
Because you do find out through the novel and through this series that I only have one child left, really. That need becomes ferocious; absolutely ferocious to see her free and liberated. And just as Sheria was sharing about the women who came before her, knowing that I want my child to be better off than I have been is the ultimate goal.
austin smith in kindred episode 5
Austin, as a man, there's a slightly different perspective that Luke is bringing to the story. Of course, he's still enslaved, but what have you learned about the gender dynamics in your time on Kindred?
Austin Smith: It's so interesting. Octavia Butler even says that she centers Black women because that is her experience, so why not write from that? It does feel like an honor just to kind of be amongst all these incredible Black women characters that she has created.
But I think the joy and the privilege of getting to play this part is getting into play somebody who has great respect for the women around him. I think in this time period, what these men were watching these women put up with and deal with just demanded such profound respect. And I think Luke has that. Whether or not he and Sarah see eye to eye on everything, I think they both have a mutual respect for what the other one is trying to do. I think that's why he tries to help Olivia and Dana, and I think he's aware that he does have more privilege than they do as a man. I think, as best he can, he tries to leverage that for them. And ultimately, we see how that works out over the course of the series. But that will be my answer to that.
Obviously, all times are terrible, so we don't want to time travel to anywhere in the past. But from an educational perspective, if there was a place that you could learn more about and see firsthand, what would you want to see?
Sophina Brown: I'll go! Absolutely, I want to go to the 60s to learn more about the Black Arts Movement. If I could travel and just get up in that for a minute; not in it, but fly on the wall. I want to be right there with the Amiri Baraka. I want to be right there with those those men and women who were on the front lines of the Black Arts Movement, and also the Black Power movement.
Austin Smith: I would love to have a sit down with Fred Hampton. He was so brilliant, and at such a young age. I would just want to have a 45-minute conversation with him and then come right back to the present. But he's definitely somebody who I would just love to to just sit down and chop it up with.
Sheria Irving: A movement and time that I would love to go back to, as painful as it was... I am lowkey a freedom fighter, so I could totally be all in the 60s on the front lines of some marches. I could do that. I feel like I'm built for that.

Ben's mother Margaret and his stepbrother Thomas are determined to take care of her until the baby arrives. Reception
The film has a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The site's consensus reads, "Kindred's naturalistic approach may frustrate viewers seeking jump scares, but this psychologically driven horror story casts its own grim spell."[6] Kate Erbland of IndieWire graded the film a B.[7]
Owen Gleiberman of Variety gave the film a positive review and wrote that "Kindred is a demonstration of how a naturalistic horror film can be derivative, in the most flagrant and shameless way, and still work."[8]
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also gave the film a positive review and wrote "Marcantonio shows confidence and maturity in his choices. There are no cheap jump scares or shocks, just a queasy feeling that gets under the skin and remains there in a film notable for its sustained mood."[9]

One week after the film's release, on March 16, 2020, Universal Pictures announced that the film would be available digitally through premium VOD in the United States and Canada on March 20, before the end of the usual 90-day theatrical run.[1]
The film was originally planned to be released theatrically in the United States on this date. However, on March 16, Universal Pictures announced that the film would be released simultaneously in drive-in theaters, as regular movie theaters closed due to the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and through premium VOD in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Korea, and Italy.[2] This affected the number of projections and the box office performance of the screenings. As the pandemic receded, the film was released back in regular theaters.
Released on premium VOD in United States and Canada on this date, and later released in theaters in select countries with relaxed COVID-19 restrictions beginning June 25, 2020.[3][4] As the pandemic receded, the film was released back in regular theaters.
Released on premium VOD in United States and Canada on this date due to the movie theater closures since mid March because of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.[5]
Studio/production notes
The film was originally scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures, but distribution rights were sold to Apple TV+.
