Black Holes: Secrets Of Space

Deep in the heart of the Milky Way lies a cosmic enigma: a black hole called Sagittarius A. While no one has physically traveled there, scientists have learned an incredible amount about black holes using telescopes, mathematical theories, and simulations. Black holes are regions in space where gravity is so strong that nothing—not even light—can escape. They form when massive stars exhaust their fuel and collapse under their own gravity. This collapse compresses all of the star’s mass into an incredibly small point called a singularity. Surrounding this singularity is the event horizon, the boundary beyond which nothing can return.
