Salwan Momika Death: Who Was Salwan Momika? Iraqi Man Who Burned Quran Shot Dead Salwan Momika, the Iraqi man known for burning the Quran in Sweden, has reportedly been shot dead at his home in Hovsjo, Sodertalje, late Wednesday. He was facing charges of inciting racial hatred over his Quran-burning actions, with a verdict expected on Thursday. In 2023, the Swedish Migration Agency decided to expel Momika, but his expulsion was halted due to threats in Iraq, and he was granted a temporary residence permit until April 2024. Originally from Qaraqosh in northern Iraq's Nineveh province, Momika was raised as an Assyrian Catholic. During the 2006-2008 civil war, he joined the Assyrian Patriotic Party and served as a security guard in Mosul. After ISIS captured Mosul in 2014, Momika joined the Popular Mobilization Forces to fight against them. He later fled to Germany in 2017, renouncing Christianity and declaring atheism, before seeking asylum in Sweden in 2018. Despite being granted a temporary residence permit in 2021, his application for permanent residence was denied due to discrepancies in his asylum claim. While in Sweden, he met with Christian Democrat MP Robert Halef and Sweden Democrats' Julia Kronlid, later expressing interest in running for the Riksdag as a candidate for the Sweden Democrats.
