Joy Reid: Trump Signed Laken Riley Act Named For Woman Killed By UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANT

Joy Reid: Trump signed the Laken Riley Act today, named for a young woman killed by an undocumented immigrant, a story that is captivated the Fox News audience and the American right. The visuals of the speech he gave before the signing were odd for an American president. He was flanked by members of the military in a scene that reminded some of the less, I don't know, small d democratic leader like Vladimir Putin. This first actual legislation of his second administration allows for the detention of undocumented immigrants merely accused of theft related crimes.

The ACLU responded by saying the Laken Riley Act will authorize the largest expansion of mandatory detention we've seen in decades, adding individuals would be mandatorily locked up, potentially for years, because at some point in their lives, perhaps decades ago, they were accused of non violent offenses like shoplifting. Trump's signature on that Bill comes as we've seen an increase in ICE arrests with agents now racing to meet their new arrest quotas.
