Intelligence staff for Chernarus 3rd Separate Tank Brigade intercepted data through electronic intercepts and reports from local friendly agents that separatists were planning to capture the village of Stepnoye in Northwest Chernarus.

The separatist forces detected moving south towards the village were largely mobile armored forces. They had already moved some of the forces into town. 3rd Tank Brigade commander issued a warning order to 3rd Battalion to dispatch a task force with orders to prevent the capture of the village.

In the initial encounters, friendly forces were engaged by light wheeled armor, heavy and medium tracked armor, and by Wagner Group operated gunships. As the task force closed in on Stepnoye, mobile forces counterattacked our tanks and tank mounted infantry, but ultimately were driven back to the north.

As Command Squad closed on the southern edge of Stepnoye, they encountered two Chechen rifle squads. A lengthy firefight ensued, ultimately forcing the Chechens back out of town. At that moment it came to the commander's attention that 2nd Squad had become nearly completely wiped out, by actions from enemy light wheeled armor and by enemy UAVs.

Remnants of 2nd Squad were folded into Reinforcing Rifle Squad 2 and ordered to Stepnoye to defend the town. At that moment, however, battalion commander set a new objective at a location approximately one km to the northwest of Stepnoye. Enemy counterattacks still were incoming as friendly vehicles and Reinforcing Rifle Squad 2 fought off the attacks.

At the new objective, Command Squad fought off a series of counterattacks, by North Korean regulars, Spanish speaking regulars, and Serbian regulars, all of whom were defeated after lengthy, though damaging gunfights. During this time, the enemy had infiltrated several armored vehicles to the south of the new objective, sacrificing them to friendly counterfire, ultimately destroying them.

The Task Force commander received orders, that the operation was deemed a success and ordered the task force to retreat back to base. While on the return leg, Command Squad encountered an enemy T-62 blocking the avenue of retreat, forcing the commander to call in a pair of tanks normally tasked with defending the battalion commander. After a lengthy tank gunfight the enemy T-62 was destroyed, and the return to base continued.

Losses were catastrophic. Both BRDM Scout cars, both T-34s, both BMPs and one T-72 tank were destroyed. 2nd Squad and Reinforcing Rifle Squad 1 were wiped out. Command Squad lost six.

Field counts of enemy losses included three technicals, three BRDM scout cars, three T-34 tanks, three UAVs, two T-55 tanks, two T-62 tanks, one BTR-80A, and one BMP.

3rd Battalion commander pointed out that the original mission and the subsequent mission to defend Stepnoye and the new objective were successfully completed, albeit with catastrophic losses. Friendly forces inflicted near total damage to enemy armored forces in Northwest Chernarus. Enemy losses were so severe, according to 3rd Brigade intelligence staff, that the separatists may not attempt operations until the spring.
