Zenshu Episode 5 is titled “Justice.” The upcoming episode is expected to prioritise MemmeIn's narrative again.
Zenshu's latest episode, “Eternity,” swiftly changes directions as Natsuko notices something iffy about MemmeIn's behaviour. Retracing her steps to “A Tale of Perishing,” she recalls that even her favourite childhood anime movie hinted at a mystery tied to the elf. Presumably, fans (in Natsuko's real world) still haven't decoded the secret surrounding her character, either. With Natsuko now actually living her beloved anime's truth, she has the chance to do what others couldn't: pursue the mysteries from within.

Zenshu Episode 5 preview
On Friday, MAPPA Studio released the preview of Zenshu Episode 5, titled “Justice,” shortly after the fourth broadcast on TV Tokyo. The brand-new teaser switches gears compared to the initial four counterparts. The narrative control is passed on to MemmeIn instead of Unio, the unicorn.

Introducing herself to the viewers, she explains how the ‘The Nine Soldiers’ unit used to have nine soldiers: Luke, Unio, QJ, Ganger, Admiral, Capitan, Chingosman and her… Forgetting who the ninth member was she says, “I have a feeling there was one more…” before the voiceover fades out. The first few episodes have already witnessed Natsuko becoming a member of the team. Since the season has merely begun, not all characters have earned their solo time in the spotlight yet, leaving much up to speculation about their roles and backstories.
MemmeIn's admission signals a foreboding subplot ahead as we probe the origin story of The Nine Soldiers further. Who was the ninth soldier? Where are they now? Are they dead? Did they betray the others? Episode 4 is expected to be our gateway to the answers to all these questions.

Premise
The series centers on Natsuko Hirose, a prodigy animator, who quickly rose to become a director. Her debut TV series became a social phenomenon, making her famous in the process. Following up with her new original work, she finds herself struggling with the project's storyboard. During a lunch break, she reads the news that another animator had recently died of food poisoning, only for her to suffer from a similar fate moments later. However, Natsuko finds herself waking up in the world of A Tale of Perishing, her childhood anime series that led her to becoming an animator. Disillusioned with experiencing the sheer hopelessness of the anime's storyline in person, she later discovers that she has the power to re-animate scenes in order to alter the storyline to survive the cruelness of being in her childhood anime's world.
Characters
Natsuko Hirose (広瀬ナツ子, Hirose Natsuko)
Voiced by: Anna Nagase (Japanese); Madeleine Morris (English)[1][6]
An animator who got food poisoning and awakens in a world based on her favorite childhood anime A Tale of Perishing. She discovers that her animator tool came along with her, which has also gained a will of its own, though only she can hear its voice. Using the tool, she can summon a magic work desk and use it to quickly draw something that she can temporarily bring to life. She also has control over her creations. However, there are limits: her powers only work in dire situations, she cannot draw the same thing twice, she is vulnerable while drawing, and she passes out for three days after using her powers. On most occasions, her face is covered by her long hair, which led the Nine Soldiers to believe that she's a gremlin when they first met her. She soon becomes a member of the Nine Soldiers and is good friends with Destiny.
Luke Braveheart (ルーク・ブレイブハート, Rūku Bureibuhāto)
Voiced by: Kazuki Ura (Japanese); Ryan Negrón (English)[1][6]
The main protagonist of A Tale of Perishing and the leader of the Nine Soldiers. He isn't all the caring as he at first mistreats Natsuko after thinking that she is a gremlin, but his views towards her changes upon seeing her unbelievable powers and that she's really a human being. However, he continues to be a rude and arrogant jerk towards Natsuko, which she understands and refuses to give him what he wants and he ends up insulting Memmeln when trying to make an excuse of not letting Natsuko join them. He may secretly have feelings for Natsuko after seeing her face. He also has feelings for Destiny.
Unio (ユニオ, Yunio)
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (Japanese); Luci Christian (English)[1][6]
A small unicorn-like creature and a member of the Nine Soldiers. He can transform into a flying unicorn. Like Luke, he at first treats Natsuko like an outcast until learning of her true characteristics. He was originally meant to be the first to die in the storyline by sacrificing himself to destroy a Void army, but was saved by Natsuko after she creates a monster to destroy them instead. Nevertheless, he still doesn’t click well with Natsuko, who usually swings him around and throws him whenever she’s mad at him.
Memmeln (メメルン, Memerun)
Voiced by: Minori Suzuki (Japanese); Alexis Tipton (English)[1][6]
A female elf who is a member of the Nine Soldiers. She is skilled with a bow and arrow, which have magical capabilities. When Luke tries to make an excuse about not letting Natsuko join them by saying an issue about women, Memmeln gives him a cold shoulder for that as she too is a woman. She and QJ are the only members who do not have any personal issues towards Natsuko. However, Memmeln is shown to be hiding something from the group, but Natsuko is aware of this. It is revealed that she is part of a cult who seeks to awaken the Ultimate Void so it can end their immortality. She was originally meant to be killed by Luke following her transformation into the Ultimate Void, but this was changed when Memmeln decided to reconsider (due to Natsuko reprimanding her earlier for not caring about innocent people) and Natsuko created a character called Sir Exister from an anime called Uta-Men, who dances with Memmeln to make her give up her attempt to end her eternal life due to her now idolizing Exister.
QJ
Voiced by: Akio Suyama (Japanese); Derick Snow (English)[1][6]
A flying robot who is a member of the Nine Soldiers. He can analyze situations and give advice, and can also fire lasers at enemies. He and Memmeln are the only members who do not have any personal issues towards Natsuko.
Justice
Voiced by: Romi Park[4]
Destiny Heartwarming
Voiced by: Manaka Iwami[4]
The mayor’s daughter and Luke's love interest, who wears a skimpy outfit. She was originally engaged with a rich chairman so she can start an orphanage. After being saved from a Void by Natsuko (she was originally meant to die at this point), who creates a wrestler character named Serval Cat Mask to defeat it, she becomes fascinated by her creation and begins wearing a wrestling outfit of her own, which is even more revealing than her previous outfit and also comes with a cat mask, wanting to be a fighter too. She also plans to start an orphanage on her own after declining the chairman’s proposal and is now good friends with Natsuko.

Natsuko Hirose is a young animator who became famous following the widespread success of her first series and is currently struggling with her new project. Natsuko learns on the news that another animator died of food poisoning. As she rewatches her childhood anime A Tale of Perishing while eating lunch, she gets poisoned as well. Natsuko wakes up in a desert-like place and is attacked by an insect-like creature, but is saved by Luke Braveheart, Memmeln, Unio and QJ, a group called the Nine Soldiers and the main characters from her childhood anime. They mistake her for a gremlin due to her hair covering her face and leave her to travel on foot to the Last Town. Natsuko realizes she is inside the anime and, knowing what happens in the storyline, tries to warn Luke about the imminent Void army attack on the Last Town, which he ignores. He also notices Natsuko is hungry but does not give her any food. The Void army soon appears and begin advancing towards the town. Natsuko knows that Unio is going to create a suicide bomb to defeat the Void army. She realizes she has her animator tool with her, which speaks to her, telling her to draw before transforming into a magical animation work desk. Natsuko draws at rapid speed and creates a giant being which blasts away the Void army and prevents Unio's death. Astounded by Natsuko’s unusual abilities, Luke asks Natsuko who she is and where she comes from. Natsuko says she is an animator and comes from reality before she faints and her hair parts, revealing to Luke and his allies that she is a human. Misunderstanding what she said, Luke believes that Natsuko comes from a kingdom called Reality and she is an "anneemator".
2 "Defending to the Death"
Transliteration: "Shishu." (Japanese: 死守。) Ai Kondō Kimiko Ueno Risako Yoshida Shuji Takahara January 12, 2025
A flashback from Natsuko's childhood reveals that in the setting of A Tale of Perishing, there are nine countries that have glowing crystals called Soul Futures, which are being targeted by the Voids. Should all nine be destroyed, it will allow a powerful monster called the Great Void to appear and destroy the world. In the present, Natsuko awakens after being passed out for three days. Luke provides Natsuko with food and questions her about her origins, becoming very surprised when she reveals her knowledge of his personal information. Natsuko then attempts to show off her powers, but her animation tool doesn't activate, indicating that her powers cannot be used all the time. Unio gets involved in the conversation when he assumes that they are fighting. Last Town's mayor calls the Nine Soldiers and Natsuko for a meeting. Natsuko is amazed by the mayor's appearance. Baobab, the town's prophet, arrives, and she and the mayor question Natsuko about the "Real World" that she came from, but her explanations make her appear crazy. Natsuko begins to question that she did not die and is instead teleported to the anime world. Baobab warns them that only one Soul Future remains and that its destruction will unleash the Great Void. She suggests to have Natsuko join the Nine Soldiers, but Luke and Unio are against this as they both continue to insult her and Luke makes an poor excuse against her about women when Memmeln is next to him. Seeing how a stuck-up jerk Luke is for not listening to her reasons, Natsuko leaves and returns to the place where she previously woke up, wanting to go back to the real world, but finds that she cannot leave this reality. She decides to go see Luke, who questions her further after remembering that she correctly predicted the earlier Void attack. After warning them of the upcoming aerial Void attack, Natsuko agrees to join the Nine Soldiers, hoping to eventually find a way back to the real world. While visiting a bar and talking to the bar matron Naomi, Natsuko realizes that Naomi appears to be a reference to an animator from the real world and ponders if other teleported humans may have entered this world too. The next day, the Void invasion happens and Natsuko's animator tool finally activates during the battle, though only she can hear its voice. Her tool restricts her from creating the same thing twice so Natsuko creates numerous homing missiles that take out all the flying Voids and destroy their mothership. She then passes out for three days again and after waking up, Luke provides her with a meal and part of Natsuko's hair is tied upwards so her face can be seen.
3 "Destiny"
Transliteration: "Unmei." (Japanese: 運命。) Yasufumi Soejima Kimiko Ueno Yasufumi Soejima Kayoko Ishikawa & Etsuko Sumimoto January 19, 2025
Natsuko recalls the previous events that occurred as the townsfolk cheer for her. During the Harvest Festival, Memmeln gets Natsuko dressed in a gown, which she finds uncomfortable. Natsuko then gets into a fight with Unio. A ceremony for the Soul Future then takes place. While enjoying herself, Natsuko predicts that the next attack will occur on a rainy day, but Luke is still cautious as he is swarmed by admirers. Memmeln leaves to take part in a choir while Unio has difficulty getting attention. Luke meets Destiny Heartwarming, the mayor’s daughter and is going to be Luke's love interest of the story, who is hiding from a chairman and his wives. Natsuko recalls future events involving Destiny and that she will die at one point. Destiny later speaks with her father, who is concerned about her engagement to the chairman as she had hoped he would help her accomplish her dream of running an orphanage. Luke meets Destiny again and begins developing feelings for her as they begin dancing. That night, while mysterious robed figures confront a mantis-like Void, Destiny interacts with Natsuko, who has changed out of her gown. When the chairman finds her, Natsuko convinces Destiny to start an orphanage without the chairman’s help. Voids begin entering the city and Natsuko discovers that one of the priests is a Void in disguise and does a fast dance to blow its cover; it is the same Void from earlier. The Void attacks Destiny, and Unio and a drunk Luke try to save her. Natsuko's powers activate and QJ protects her while she draws. She creates a tiger-like wrestler who fights the Void in a wrestling match with Natsuko as the host. The Void loses the fight and Natsuko falls unconscious again. While eating a meal with Luke, Destiny arrives in a revealing wrestler’s outfit that comes with a mask due to her admiring Natsuko's creation and wanting to be a fighter as well, having also decided to start an orphanage on her own after turning down the chairman’s proposal, and is now friends with Natsuko. Memmeln was absent from the Void attack; she is hiding something, which Natsuko notices.
4 "Eternity"
Transliteration: "Eien." (Japanese: 永遠。) Iho Ishikawa Kimiko Ueno Mitsue Yamazaki Kayoko Ishikawa & Kazuko Hayakawa January 26, 2025
Suspecting that someone helped the Mantis Void from before, Natsuko secretly follows Memmeln, knowing that she is part of a group of mages that were responsible for transforming the Mantis Void into a priest to make it destroy the Soul Future, but doesn't know their true goal. In the original storyline, the Ultimate Void appeared after Luke saw through the Mantis Void's disguise and slayed it, but it is revealed to be a transformed Memmeln. Luke tags along with her and she reveals Memmeln's secret. Following her and the elves from before to a secret cavern, they witness a cult performing a ritual (revealed to be the "choir" that Memmeln was attending) to awaken the Ultimate Void. When Unio arrives, Natsuko warns Luke against telling him to avoid panic and they leave afterwards. Luke argues with Natsuko over how to resolve the situation. The next day, they ask Memmeln about her motive and she explains that she and the cult are helping the Voids because they are tired of living forever as elves and want to end their immortality. Luke is hurt by this discovery while Natsuko reprimands Memmeln for not caring for others. Memmeln leaves that night, but Luke forms a plan to resolve this. Luke disguises himself as one of the cultists to enter the ceremony. Memmeln transforms into the Ultimate Void itself, which is when Luke will kill her. Natsuko's tool activates and she begins drawing. At this point, Memmeln changes her mind about this after recalling Natsuko's words and stops the ritual, returning to normal in the process as Luke directs everyone's attention towards whom they think is the Ultimate Void; it is actually Natsuko's creation: a charming man named Sir Exister from an anime called Uta-Men who hands them flowers and dances with Memmeln before disappearing. Natsuko shows Memmeln the drawing of Sir Exister before passing out. Memmeln decides life is worth living if she can fangirl over the drawing forever. As Luke and Unio are in the garden, a mysterious bird is watching them.

MAPPA Co., Ltd. (Japanese: 株式会社MAPPA, Hepburn: Kabushiki-gaisha MAPPA) is a Japanese animation studio headquartered in Nakano, Tokyo[2] (formerly in Suginami, Tokyo). Founded in 2011 by Madhouse co-founder and producer Masao Maruyama, it has produced anime works including Terror in Resonance, Yuri!!! on Ice, In This Corner of the World, Kakegurui, Banana Fish, Zombie Land Saga, Dororo (in co-production with Tezuka Productions), Dorohedoro, The God of High School, Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan (season 4), Vinland Saga (season 2), Chainsaw Man, Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, and the 2024 adaptation of Ranma ½. MAPPA is an acronym for Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association.[3][4]
Business
History
The studio was established on June 14, 2011, by Masao Maruyama, a co-founder and former producer of Madhouse, at the age of 70.[5] Maruyama served as the company's first representative director, and the studio's initial goal was to produce Sunao Katabuchi's In This Corner of the World. Due to financial difficulties at Madhouse, Maruyama and Katabuchi established MAPPA in the hopes of producing the film; however, despite moving studios, the film had a lot of production troubles, and wasn't released until 5 years later.[6] Maruyama first started working with Katabuchi for the film in 2010 during Madhouse era, but it took three years to start the production due to difficulties to raising funds. Mappa is overworked and cannot meet demand. [7]
In April 2016, Maruyama resigned as a CEO of the studio and became a chairman. Studio animation producer Manabu Otsuka, a founding member and a former employee of Studio 4°C, became the CEO following Maruyama's official departure.
Controversies
Many describe the studio as perfectionist, the studio's scheduling, work, and culture have been the subject of intense scrutiny.[8] Veteran animator Hisashi Eguchi criticized the studio's low pay.[9] Mushiyo, another animator at MAPPA, also criticized the company for not properly training its animators and the studio's culture of overwork, which led to them eventually quitting their job at the studio.[10] Besides the animator's individual output within the studio, they also criticized the company's decision to produce four series concurrently.[10] Kevin Cirugeda from Sakugablog suggested the problems were due to the studio's incredibly fast-paced growth and "recklessness".[11]
Cirugeda also noted that in the 20 televised animes MAPPA produced from the beginning of 2015 to the beginning of 2020, the company had only been on the production committee for four of them, all of which listed MAPPA near the bottom or at the very bottom of the list, indicating that they served to a capacity almost as if they were being specifically contracted for work even on "original" series.[11]
MAPPA denied offering "unreasonable compensation" to "creators" in a response to claims that the studio underpaid workers;[12] however, animator Ippei Ichii claimed that an anime produced by MAPPA under Netflix was suggesting a pay of ¥3,800 per cut,[12] to which Ichii claimed that ¥15,000 is the minimum cost that animators should negotiate for.[12]

Isekai (Japanese: 異世界 transl. 'different world', 'another world', or 'other world') is a sub-genre of fiction. It includes novels, light novels, films, manga, webtoons, anime, and video games that revolve around a displaced person or people who are transported to and have to survive in another world such as a fantasy world, game world, or parallel universe with or without the possibility of returning to their original world. Isekai is one of the most popular genres of anime, and isekai stories share many common tropes – for example, a powerful protagonist who is able to beat most people in the other world by fighting. This plot device emphasise worldbuilding and non-protagonist characters, and typically allows the audience to learn about the new world at the same pace as the protagonist over the course of their quest or lifetime.[1] If the main characters are transported to a game-like world, the genre can overlap with LitRPG.
The concept of isekai started in Japanese folktales, such as Urashima Tarō. However, the first modern isekai works were Haruka Takachiho's novel Warrior from Another World and Yoshiyuki Tomino's television series Aura Battler Dunbine.
History
Early media
The concept of isekai has antecedents in ancient Japanese literature, particularly the story of a fisherman Urashima Tarō, who saves a turtle and is brought to a wondrous undersea kingdom. After spending what he believed to be four to five days there, Urashima returns to his home village only to find himself 300 years in the future. Other precursors to isekai include portal fantasy stories from English literature, notably the novels Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889), The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), Peter Pan (1904), and The Chronicles of Narnia (1950).

The earliest modern Japanese isekai stories include Haruka Takachiho's novel Warrior from Another World (1979), Tatsunoko Production CBN collaborative Christian anime Superbook (1981), the anime film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz (1982) and Yoshiyuki Tomino's anime Aura Battler Dunbine (1983).[2][3][4] The earliest isekai anime to involve the protagonist being trapped in the virtual world of a video game was the film Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986), based on the hit video game Super Mario Bros. (1985); the anime film adaptation involves Mario playing a video game that comes to life, making it an ancestor of the "trapped in a video game" subgenre of isekai.[2]
