The End is a 2024 apocalyptic musical film directed and co-written by Joshua Oppenheimer. Produced by Oppenheimer, Signe Byrge Sørensen, and star Tilda Swinton, the film also features George MacKay, Moses Ingram, Bronagh Gallagher, Tim McInnerny, Lennie James, and Michael Shannon.
The film premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival on 31 August 2024. It was released by Neon in the United States on 6 December 2024.
Plot
Set two decades after an environmental catastrophe renders Earth's surface uninhabitable, the story centers on a wealthy family— Mother, Father, and their 20-year-old Son—who have isolated themselves in a luxurious bunker deep within a converted salt mine, along with a few other individuals- Friend, one of Mother's oldest friends, Butler, an aging queer man who serves the others, and Doctor, who provides them with medication and keeps track of safety precautions and procedures. The Son, having spent his entire life underground, yearns to experience the outside world he's never seen and build scale models of historical events and places ("A Wonderful Gift"). The family follows a regular schedule, including safety emergency drills, fitness at an indoor pool, regular duties to keep the bunker and their small outpost running, and managing a collection of fine art Mother had brought with them. The family also decorates the bunker to evoke the changing seasons. The Mother wants everything to appear perfect, and obsesses over the details of the bunker's decor and layout. The Son is helping the Father write his memoir (although they acknowledge no one will ever read it), while taking creative liberties around the Father's former work as an oil tycoon and describing his work as "energy sector" and describing in detail his philanthropy. The Friend describes to the Son how her son was sick with cancer and would not have survived in the bunker. The Son struggles with loneliness and longing to experience the world ("Alone").
The group eventually finds a Girl unconscious in the mines and bring her in to question her about how she found them. The Girl describes the uninhabitable surface and says that her family died when they tried to cross a river, and she is alone, later reflecting on her trauma ("Exhale"). They decide to cast her back out onto the surface, but the Girl escapes and runs through the bunker, evading them until the Son pleads for them to let her stay.
The Girl struggles to adapt to life in the bunker ("We Kept Our Distance"). Mother is suspicious of the Girl, and voices her concerns to the Father while also trying to teach the Girl about their life and trying to investigate her motives. The Mother tries to be intimate with the Father, who is surprised by her actions. The Girl and the Son slowly bond ("Catch Fire"). The Son confesses to his parents that he is developing feelings for the Girl, and they argue about the nature of love and the Son's naivete. The Son gifts the Girl with a watch, who appears hesitant. The Girl argues with the Son about his scale models of the outside world when he tries to justify the brutality of the first transcontinental railroad. The Mother and Friend both struggle with sleeplessness and nightmares, which the Doctor downplays and prescribes them sleeping pills. During a writing session, the Son tries to learn more about their lives before and learn more about how his Father met Mother. The Butler and the Father describe love and longing, and the Son writes a flowery and embellished version of events where the Father met the Mother, which he later mimics back to the Mother. ("If Only I")
Time moves on and they enter the winter ("Another Winter"). The family celebrates New Year's Eve with a program of skits and elaborate homemade costumes of animals, where the Butler and Father perform a soft shoe tap dance ("New Year's Eve"). During the New Year's Eve dinner, the Girl appeals to the Mother about leaving the rest of humanity behind, arguing with her about what guilt they must feel before the Father stops the conversation. Mother struggles with survivor's guilt, and after arguing with the Father who tells her that she chose this life as well, the Mother justifies their actions of leaving her family behind ("The Mirror").
The Father continues to justify his actions while writing the book with the Son, and Later tries to convince the Girl of his innocence, saying that all of the other corporations were worse than he was and he at least "cared". The Father reflects on his actions, his own mortality and age, and continues to justify how they contributed to the end ("The Big Blue Sky"). Eventually, the Son argues with the Father about why they left everyone else behind, and the Friend confesses that her son did not die from cancer but struggled with addiction, and she chose to leave him to come to the bunker. She later gets more sleeping pills from the Doctor and overdoses. The Son is distraught when they discover her body and argues with the Girl, telling her that it's her fault her family is dead.
Some time in the future, the Son and the Girl have a baby together, and the family gathers to celebrate the Girl's birthday, taking a family photo. The Girl and the Mother both ponder the future ("Our Future is Bright").

Reception
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 52% of 77 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.8/10. The website's consensus reads: "The End doesn't lack for ambition or talent, but its bold vision is ill-served by a bloated runtime and monotonous musical score."[12] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 67 out of 100, based on 27 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[13]
Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "The End requires complete submission to the off-kilter rules that govern this family and to Oppenheimer's ambitions to radicalize the musical genre. It's an admirable if uneven endeavor."[14] Sheila O'Malley of RogerEbert.com gave the film two and a half stars out of four and wrote, "The experiment of The End may not entirely work, but it is good that it exists."[15]

George Mackay, her plays her son, has never seen the outside world. Shannon co-stars as his father, while Moses Ingram plays a stranger who arrives, interrupting their carefully crafted underground world.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Twenty-five years after environmental collapse left the Earth uninhabitable, Mother, Father and Son are confined to their palatial bunker, where they struggle to maintain hope and a sense of normalcy by clinging to the rituals of daily life—until the arrival of a stranger, Girl, upends their happy routine. Son, a naïve twenty-something who has never seen the outside world, is fascinated by the newcomer, and suddenly, the delicate bonds of blind optimism that have held this wealthy clan together begin to fray. Trailers
The end of the world is getting more sing-songy than usual in Neon's new audacious musical, The End, which boasts a stellar ensemble cast led by Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon. The latest feature film from The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer, The End takes place in a world where most of humanity has been wiped out in an apocalyptic disaster, with the only survivors being an affluent family living in a state-of-the-art bunker. At least, they think they're the last of humanity, but as the first trailer for The End shows, they might just be wrong.
The first trailer for The End introduces the small group of family members that have taken refuge after the Earth freezes over in an apparent new ice age. Things get complicated when a young woman (Moses Ingram) suddenly appears on their doorstep, despite that same doorstep being under several feet of solid ice. Many of the family members are understandably skeptical about this stranger and her intentions, but the youngest of the group (George MacKay) forms an almost immediate attachment to her. The trailer for The End also avoids what has become a common criticism of modern-day movie musicals. Instead of hiding the elaborate musical numbers altogether, the trailer for the upcoming film proudly boasts its numerous songs.
The End is both directed and co-written by Joshua Oppenheimer, who received Oscar nominations for both The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. The End represents a significant departure for Oppenheimer, given that the filmmaker has mostly made a name for himself in the world of documentaries. The film also features an ensemble cast that includes Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer), Michael Shannon (The Bikeriders), George MacKay (1917), Lennie James (The Walking Dead), Bronagh Gallagher (Pulp Fiction), Tim McInnerny (Gladiator II), and Moses Ingram (Obi-Wan Kenobi).
'The End' Proves Musicals Are Making a Comeback in 2024
The trailer for The End also proudly boasts some of the film's high reviews since premiering at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, with Collider's own Jason Gorber calling it in his review of the film as a "challenging work that, while imperfect, has the potential to be more rewarding as time passes." 2024 in general appears to be a very big year for movie musicals, as some of the year's most anticipated films are in that genre. This includes the long-awaited adaptation of Wicked, the upcoming Disney sequel Moana 2, and the 2025 Oscar hopeful Emilia Pérez.
The End premieres in theaters on Friday, December 6, 2024. You can watch the trailer above.

The trailer for Tilda Swinton‘s new apocalypse movie has been released!
The 63-year-old Oscar-winning actress stars in Joshua Oppenheimer‘s new musical movie The End about a family that survived the end of the world alongside Michael Shannon, George MacKay, and Moses Ingram.
Here the synopis: “Twenty-five years after environmental collapse left the Earth uninhabitable, Mother, Father and Son areconfined to their palatial bunker, where they struggle to maintain hope and a sense of normalcy byclinging to the rituals of daily life—until the arrival of a stranger, Girl, upends their happy routine. Son, anaïve twenty-something who has never seen the outside world, is fascinated by the newcomer, andsuddenly the delicate bonds of blind optimism that have held this wealthy clan together begin to fray. Astensions rise, their seemingly idyllic existence starts to crumble, with long-repressed feelings of remorseand resentment threatening to destroy the family’s delicate balance. But their reckoning with difficulttruths also points to a different way forward, one based on acceptance, love, and a capacity for change.”
Along with directing the movie, Oppenheimer also co-wrote the screenplay and and wrote the lyrics of the songs.
The End first theaters in Los Angeles and New York City on December 6 before a wider release on December 13.
NEON has shared the trailer for The End, an upcoming post-apocalyptic musical starring Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon.
Directed by Academy Award-nominated director Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing, The Look of Silence), the upcoming movie — billed as an “urgent and unforgettable cautionary tale” — will chronicle the story of a family that survived the end of the world.
The trailer for The End introduces the family along with their friends as they navigate life after surviving the apocalypse. Confined in a shelter and stuck with their daily routines, a mysterious woman suddenly arrives — putting an end to their monotonous lives.
The official synopsis reads as follows: “Twenty-five years after environmental collapse left the Earth uninhabitable, Mother, Father and Son are confined to their palatial bunker, where they struggle to maintain hope and a sense of normalcy by clinging to the rituals of daily life-until the arrival of a stranger, Girl, upends their happy routine. Son, a naïve twenty-something who has never seen the outside world, is fascinated by the newcomer, and suddenly the delicate bonds of blind optimism that have held this wealthy clan together begin to fray. As tensions rise, their seemingly idyllic existence starts to crumble, with long-repressed feelings of remorse and resentment threatening to destroy the family’s delicate balance. But their reckoning with difficult truths also points to a different way forward, one based on acceptance, love, and a capacity for change.”
In addition to Swinton as Mother and Shannon as Father, The End also stars George MacKay (1917) as Son, Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit) as Girl, Bronagh Gallagher (Brassic) as Friend, Tim McInnerny (Stromboli) as Butler, Lennie James (Colombiana) as Doctor, and Danielle Ryan (Wild Mountain Thyme) as Mary.
Oppenheimer also wrote The End alongside Rasmus Heisterberg, with Swinton serving as one of the producers.
The End hits theaters on December 6, 2024.
With “The Act of Killing,” director Joshua Oppenheimer approached the documentary form in a radical, seemingly unthinkable way, inviting his subjects — Indonesian gangsters who had once served on the country’s death squads — to reenact their crimes on camera. Why should his narrative debut be any more conventional?
For “The End,” Oppenheimer conceives a peculiar post-apocalyptic musical, confined to an underground bunker where an elite set of people have hoarded fine art and expensive wines for a cataclysm that, perversely enough, they may well have instigated. Oppenheimer got the idea from a documentary he was developing about a “very wealthy, very dangerous family” (in his words), but ultimately chose to steer the project in a very different direction.

With its turgid 148-minute running time and defiant lack of compelling conflict, “The End” doesn’t pander to mainstream sensibilities. Rather, Oppenheimer appeals to the art-house crowd with a serious-minded rumination on guilt and the human capacity to rationalize away one’s misdeeds. The filmmaker hatched the project before the COVID-19 pandemic, but somehow failed to consider that audiences have had their fill of claustrophobic shut-in stories.
Popular on Variety
The resulting fable surely would have benefited from some kind of suspense — say, a thriller element that threatens its tight group of survivors — but Oppenheimer stubbornly resists such concessions. In the end, “The End” is less a musical as we might imagine than a handsome highbrow drama interspersed with melancholy original songs (fewer than you might think), penned by Oppenheimer, then set to music by Joshua Schmidt (a theater composer making his big-screen debut).
The experience begins innocently enough, with a bright-eyed 20-year-old (George MacKay) who can’t recall life before lockdown, as he tinkers with an egregiously inaccurate diorama (he has Indians, settlers and slaves coexisting at the foot of the Hollywood sign) and sings sweetly to himself. He could be Ariel in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” puzzling over her whozits and whatzits galore, naively daydreaming of life on the surface. Like dawn breaking, “A Perfect Morning” makes for a lovely opening number, though MacKay’s voice, like those of the rest of the cast, doesn’t sound trained for singing. Perhaps Oppenheimer wanted it that way.
Identified simply as “Son,” the young man was born in this doomsday shelter and knows no other reality, though his parents have spent the past two decades repeating their self-serving version of events. Mother (Tilda Swinton) reminisces about her time with the Bolshoi, though it’s doubtful she ever performed. “We’ll never know if our industry contributed to rising temperatures,” says his energy-baron father (Michael Shannon), who’s clearly in denial about the world they left behind — a world they helped to destroy.
Down here, safe from whatever horrors befell humanity, the boy’s parents have maintained whatever sense of culture they can, with the help of a personal doctor (Lennie James), a butler (Tim McInnerny), a maid (Danielle Ryan) and an old friend (Bronagh Gallagher) from those earlier times. Mother spends her days rearranging the priceless artwork on the walls — including Renoir’s “The Dancer,” Monet’s “Woman With a Parasol” and awesome, enormous landscapes — and fussing over details like cracks in the plaster.
It’s been 20 years since they retreated to this self-sufficient bunker, and any notions of “normalcy” have long since been rendered irrelevant. They still observe all the holidays, putting on small, absurd pageants. Otherwise, “each day feels exactly like the last,” Swinton sings nearly two hours in, as part of her shattering (if shrill) “Dear Mom” solo. Their routines include swimming lessons and emergency drills, as survival is their priority — but to what purpose?
That seems to be the driving question of “The End,” which implies that people like these would have done better to prevent the apocalypse than to plan for it. For a time, the film plays like the extended womp-womp of a sad trombone at the end of a disaster movie, in which seven characters make it while the rest of the world perishes. Then what? Mother and Father raised the boy in their own image, making him the historian for their distorted truth while warning him of the danger of “strangers.”
And then one arrives, identified only as “Girl” (Moses Ingram). She expresses guilt for abandoning her family, which in turn dredges up long-suppressed emotions among the others, who made impossible sacrifices during the early days of the end. “Mom, in the beginning, did you see the people trying to get in?” her now-skeptical son asks. Such questions are not just inconvenient for the family, but also reflect the generational schism unfolding now in America, as young people judge find their parents’ actions tough to forgive.
Mother had no intention of letting this outsider in. “We have to draw the line somewhere,” she says. Long ago, they killed people for trying, and the butler bears the scars to show for it. But 20 years is a long time to go without news of the outside world, and the family warily allows the Girl into their bubble. Aside from MacKay, who brings a touching form of sweetness to the role, Ingram is the only member of the ensemble to display hope. The others all suggest the desiccated husks of humanity, keeping up appearances as best they can. Surely, whatever audiences experienced during the pandemic will inform how they process the intruder, though Oppenheimer approaches her with cautious optimism.
Together with “Melancholia” production designer Jette Lehmann, Oppenheimer presents an elegantly drab bunker, buried deep in a salt mine but built for comfort — not unlike the Elon Musk-inspired base seen in last year’s “A Murder at the End of the World,” a project that delivers its big-brain ideas through effective genre devices. Oppenheimer would have done well to take a similar approach, though his resistance to such choices earns “The End” the imprimatur of capital-A art (at the expense of capital-ist entertainment).
Who will see “The End”? Premiering at the Telluride Film Festival, it feels destined to flop, while also being championed by those critics and audiences who rightly feel that such risks are to be encouraged. Oppenheimer’s audacity (and that of his backers) is to be commended, though his portrait of a certain highly idiosyncratic form of foolishness can’t help feeling foolish itself. Before any musical finds its way to Broadway, it is workshopped and tested to within an inch of its life. This one seems to have breezed past such steps, trusting the vision of its maker over the needs of its audience.
There may never be another film like “The End,” and that alone makes it special, though surely all involved would prefer for it to be seen. As it is, the film feels like an obtuse missive, hidden in plain sight, just waiting for intrepid seekers to unearth it.
