Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan the Cimmerian, had two great loves of his life outside of his writing. The first of those loves was his mother, Hester Jane Ervin Howard. It was she who imbued him with a love of classic literature and spurred his education. Ultimately, it was her death that caused him to make the final decision of his life.
The second great love for him was Novalyne Price. Another writer struggling to survive in the turmoil of the 1930s, Price ran in circles close to Howard. They found each other, and each would find a fleeting love that inspired her book, One Who Walked Alone which in turn became the film The Whole Wide World.
