A suspect is in custody after a confrontation with police ended with shots being fired, according to Oklahoma City Police.
The scene was near Southwest 29th Street and Kentucky Avenue. When police arrived, a male suspect took off running. “Officers were called to the 1400 block of SW 30th Street in reference to a domestic. When officers were en route they were advised that a male subject outside that home was possibly shooting a gun,” said Captain Valerie Littlejohn with the Oklahoma City Police Department. “When officers did arrive on scene, they had seen the male suspect and the male had run on foot from officers. Officers chased after him and they caught up to him in a backyard a couple of houses down,” said Littlejohn.
Police say that during the confrontation, an officer fired their weapon, striking the suspect.
“During that confrontation at some point in time, one officer did discharge his firearm toward the suspect and the suspect was hit by that gunfire,” said Captain Littlejohn. “The suspect was hit by the officer’s gunfire, he has non-life-threatening injury and is stable at this time,” she added.
Authorities confirmed that the officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues. “There was a firearm located where the suspect was when officers took him into custody,” said Captain Littlejohn.
Police are still determining the exact circumstances of the domestic disturbance. “I don't know their exact relationship. I believe it's some sort of romantic relationship, I don't know exactly what it is at this time,” said Captain Littlejohn. “As far as I know, everyone else is okay in this incident. The only injury is the male that was hit by the officer’s gunfire and has a non-life-threatening injury and is stable,” Captain Littlejohn noted.
Body camera footage is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. “Still early on in the investigation, so we’re still gonna do a thorough investigation, interviews, and determine exactly what led up to this,” said Captain Littlejohn. “No officers were injured,” she added.
