John 17:6-19 is Jesus praying for His apostles. In our scenario of comparing the Upper Room Discourse with a locker room speech, Jesus is now praying for His players, the apostles. He wants them to hear what He is asking the Father on their behalf. They have been given to Him from the Father, and He has kept them in the Word of God and with His principles. They are now qualified for what's coming--they are eligible like players who have met all requirements. Jesus as their coach again gives them encouragement and challenges them by the words of His prayer. He also shares a warning of coming opposition from the world, such as a team will experience from their opposition.
Jesus asks the Father to sanctify them by His Word, which Jesus said is Truth. Sanctification means to be set apart for God's service, and in the application of a team preparing for their opponent, Jesus wants them to know that they have been chosen and are fully prepared to handle what's coming.
The application for us is that we are now the Lord's team, and we are to be sanctified and prepared for the opposition from an unbelieving world.
