California considers letting victims of natural disasters sue oil companies for damages

California lawmakers introduced a bill on Monday that would hold oil and gas companies liable for damages from climate change-related disasters, such as wildfires and storms.

The bill claims the oil industry misled the public about the risks of fossil fuels, which have worsened these disasters.

It would allow victims and insurance companies to sue the oil industry to recover costs, and support the Fair Access to Insurance Requirements Plan, which helps homeowners who can’t find insurance, the Associated Press has reported.
