Alexander The Great - Lion Amongst Men | Asha Logos

It is said that Alexander the Great slept with Homer's 'Iliad' beneath his pillow, considering the legendary heroes of these epic tales as his peers, brothers, and kin. He believed himself to be a descendant of their lineage, viewing their courage, competence, and feats of greatness as a friendly challenge—one he embraced with every fiber of his being. The great men of past eras who strove for glory and honor are often misunderstood in our time, perceived as being driven primarily by selfish motives. However, a broader perspective might suggest the opposite—such men rarely indulged in the decadent and hedonistic luxuries enjoyed by their counterparts. Instead, they chose lives filled with hardship, struggle, and the active overcoming of obstacles in exchange for leaving a lasting impact on the fabric of reality. Their actions serve to energize, inspire, and provide a living example for all who might follow in their footsteps. Without the living memory of heroes and great men as examples in all spheres—from martial to spiritual to philosophical, and everything in between—we risk normalizing and succumbing to mediocrity, laziness, and cowardice. We become a weary, unremarkable people, living for superficial pleasures, doomed to be ruled by shopkeepers, merchants, and the self-serving administrators and politicians they inevitably come to control. We risk creating a horizon devoid of lofty mountains, their peaks reaching up to the heavens, and instead find ourselves in a landscape of undifferentiated flatness—dull, uninteresting, devoid of motivating or inspirational power, and in a very real sense, lifeless. Alexander was a mountain peak, an exemplar demonstrating that nothing is impossible for those who can simply come to understand that nothing is impossible.
