14°F Outside while Feeding the Bird

It’s 14°F outside and the neighborhood birds are flying in for nourishment. The juncos and finches are even competing for seeds, along with the larger jays and magpies. Typically, the juncos and finches stay on the deck floor for seed, rather than going up on the pillars with the bigger birds. When it is really cold, they appear to be more boldened to join in on the pillar buffet. Nonetheless, all of them (big and small) seem skittish.

In this episode, there are snowy-faced magpies, as well as the puffed-up junco who (I believe) is trying to stay warm. A blue jay does and a jump and loop-de-loop which is so cute! Every so often during the 12-minute video, as Steller’s Jay braves the cold to compete for food with other birds. Unfortunately, he appears to quickly fly away before acquiring any seed or peanuts. All of them are a delight to watch and I hope you, too, will enjoy these beautiful backyard birds.
