3.8 Magnitude Earthquake Near York Harbor, Maine, Shakes New England on January 27, 2025

Initially reported as a 4.1, the earthquake was felt widely, with people as far as Boston—about 45 miles from the epicenter—reporting the shaking.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake originated roughly 7 miles south of York Harbor at a depth of 12 miles. No injuries or damage have been reported, but plenty of residents described several seconds of noticeable rattling and vibrations in their homes.

While earthquakes aren’t exactly a hallmark of New England, this serves as a reminder that the ground here isn’t completely static. The USGS points out that the region, though not as seismically active as the West Coast, has its share of occasional rumblings.

The last notable one happened in April 2024—a 4.8 magnitude quake centered in New Jersey that shook the Boston area. Historical records show New England has weathered damaging quakes since colonial times, so while these events are rare, they’re not exactly shocking.

So… did you feel something (or is it all in the crazy turtle’s head?) and from where?
