A police officer has been commended for arresting a man carrying a knife who threatened to harm him.

Response Officer Anthony Spence made the arrest in Hollins area of Oldham, after being called out to reports of an armed robbery.

As the first officer on the scene, PC Spence carried out a search of the area moments after the suspect had gone into a local shop demanding cigarettes.

It wasn't long before PC Spence found the suspect on a nearby street, thanks to his distinctive clothing; a pink hoodie with large ears on the hood, as well as pink trousers and a black jumper.

The officer approached the suspect, who was waving around a large kitchen knife, and asked him to drop the weapon.

Instead, the suspect approached PC Spence and made threatening comments.

In footage from the officer's body-worn camera, the suspect can be heard saying: "Get back in your car and drive away."

Despite the officer repeatedly asking the suspect to get on the ground, he continued to approach and wave his weapon around.

At this point, Officer Spence called for back-up and informed the suspect he had a taser. When this did not stop the suspect from approaching, he fired the taser.

While the taser did not stop the suspect, he stopped threatening the officer and walked away. PC Spence followed the suspect to a nearby street, where he became a greater threat to the community by knocking on the doors of innocent members of the public.

Seizing on a moment of opportunity, Officer Spence managed to use his baton to disarm the man and ensured he could make a prompt arrest before any serious injury occurred.

As he is arrested, the suspect can be heard shouting: "I've been framed!"

The 26-year-old man is currently still sectioned in hospital under the Mental Health Act on suspicion of robbery, threats to kill and possession of a bladed article.
