Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Forty-Five.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Romero.

The Phantom of the Lagoon.

The wind was pushing Rahan's skiff towards the village which stretched out at the bottom of the cove, when.
Oh! This young fisherman has lost his mind!
A teenager had just dived in, oblivious to the sharks lurking around the reefs!

You have found an easy prey, "Blue-skins"!
But Rahan will not let you devour this "Little Man"!

Ra-ha-ha!
Crack!
The blow was struck with such force that the bamboo spear broke!

Page Two.

The body was pierced through from side to side, and the shark disappeared in a whirlpool.
But others were racing towards the place where the child had gone.

If the "Little Man" is not used to fighting the "Blue Skins." He is lost!

Rahan must come to his aid!
Vluf!

During his adventurous life Rahan had many times faced sharks.
Faster, Rahan, faster!

And he knew the weak point of these formidable adversaries. The ivory weapon, once again, proved it.

Page Three.

The gouged shark was immediately attacked by its fellow sharks.
Oh! The "Little Man" wants to die!

Despite the ever-present danger, the teenager continued his dive. Rahan dove in his wake.

But he had to force him to come back up to the surface.
Rahan will know why you want to join the "Shadow Territory"!

A moment later he put the suffocating child on the raft.
What.
What are you getting involved in, 'fire-hair'! Who. Who are you then?

I am Rahan, the son of Crao!
The teenager should have expressed his gratitude. It was the opposite!

What right does Rahan have to prevent Bakkou from avenging his father?

Page Four.

Avenge your father? But for what? For what?
The Phantom of the Lagoon!

The son of Crao did not have time to be more astonished.
Harpoons were falling around the Raft.
Zlap!

Yours are no more welcoming than you are grateful!

Zlang!
Oh!

Stop!
Do not kill the man with the "Fire-Hair." He just helped Bakkou against the "Blue-skins"!
Do not kill him!

Page Five.

At the sorcerer's command, the fishermen lowered their harpoons.
Yes, Rahan helped Bakkou!
But he also, Alas, prevented him from killing the phantom!

Ha-ha-ha!
Stupid and stubborn Bakkou!
You will never admit that the "Phantom" is invulnerable!

I will kill him one day, Kahik!
I will kill him!
But who is this "Phantom" that you pursue with your hatred, Bakkou?
Under the mocking gaze of Kahik the sorcerer.

The child led Rahan towards a large hut.
Come in, "Fire-Hair", and you will understand!

A man seated in the shadows wore the attributes of a leader.
I just heard Kahik! So you tried to avenge me again!

You must not do that anymore, my son! You must not risk your life anymore!
But who entered into the hut with you?

Page Six.

The man felt his son's shoulder. From his lifeless gaze, Rahan knew that he.
Was blind!
This man from the depths of the "Water Desert" helped me.
His name is Rahan!

Welcome to you, Rahan! What a pity that my eyes do not see you! But I feel you are strong.
What happened to you, brother?

It was the ghost of the lagoon who killed the father's eyes!

Bakkou spoke of an aquatic monster which, he said, haunted the depths of the lagoon.

It is like an "Eight-Armed-Beast" without being one!
Its body is transparent like water and its tentacles are algae!

Page Seven.

One morning, during a dive, this ghost emerged silently.
I was able to tear myself away from its embrace and return to shore.

But a strange fire was eating away at my eyes so that I no longer saw!
The evil spirit of the lagoon had stolen my sight!

Rahan does not believe in spirits or ghosts, but he knows that the "Water Desert" hides many unknown monsters!

Tomorrow Rahan will dive to try to see the one who killed your eyes!
Only a madman can speak like that!

Look at our leader! Do you want to lose your sight forever, like him?

Why do you not heal father, Kahik?
The elders say that once you knew a "Medicine" that restored sight!
Alas, alas.

Page Eight.

I have long forgotten the secret of this "Medicine"!
I cannot do anything for your father! Nothing!
Kahik the Sorcerer went away.

Kahik is lying!
I am sure he remembers the "Medicine-that-gives-life-back-to-the-eyes"!
So why does he not heal you?

Because since I cannot see anymore, Kahik can rule over our clan!

Bakkou spoke again of the "Phantom of the Lagoon."
He still prowls around the "Blue Reefs."
But we must not defy him anymore, Bakkou! We must not defy him anymore!

The son of Crao had never found himself faced with a mystery without trying to clear it up.
Rahan wants to know! Rahan wants to see this phantom!

I will go with you, "Fire-Hair"!
Do not do this foolishness, brother!

Page Nine.

No one could have dissuaded Rahan. And that was why at dawn.
He lives on the edge of these reefs, in a deep pit.
But he is neither a "Spirit" nor a "Ghost"!

What is “it” then, possibly?
Maybe an unknown animal!
Maybe a giant, poisonous algae! Rahan will know soon!

Let me dive with you, "Fire-Hair"!
No!
Rahan swore to your father that you would not leave the boat!

The sharks had fortunately deserted the lagoon.
The marvelous aquatic landscape was familiar to Rahan. Long algae rippled in the depths.

And schools of multi-colored fish scattered before him.
A "Manta" had just taken off from the muddy bottom.

When his blood ran cold.
The Phantom!

Page Ten.

The son of Crao had seen jellyfish before.
But this one was gigantic!
It’s umbrella and translucent tentacles were throbbing.
This "Spectre-of-the-Depths" was looking for prey.

Oh! Rahan will not have time to escape him!

The slimy tentacles suddenly grabbed him!
No! No!
Rahan will not let himself be devoured by the "Thing"!

This monster is just a skin filled with water!
The ivory knife cut and sliced into this sticky and transparent "Flesh."

Page Eleven.

The horrible grip quickly loosened.
The “Phantom” hardly attacks prey that resists him!

Tearing himself away from the hideous tentacles quite easily, he returned to the surface.
Hum, looks like Rahan just got whipped with "nettles"!

An inexplicable fire was devouring his entire body. And Suddenly.
Rahan's eyes are dying!

The raft and the teenager faded into a reddish mist.
They disappeared as the waves and the shore disappeared.

This way, Rahan!
This way! Swim this way.
The "Phantom" stole your sight like he stole father's!
The son of Crao had gone blind!

Page Twelve.

It was Bakkou who brought the skiff back to shore.
Kahik may be right that it is sacrilegious to challenge the "Phantom"!

A little later.
Your eyes are dead forever "Fire-Hair"!
This is what it costs to defy the spirit of the deep!

Two terrible days passed.
Although the fever left his body, Rahan could not regain his sight.

This is all my fault! I should not have encouraged you to dive!
Eat something, brother.

Rahan is not hungry!
Rahan has no reason to live anymore!

The son of Crao remained prostrate, obsessed by a single thought.
Rahan will never see the rivers again.
Neither the forests, nor the sun.

He divined the "Water Desert" shimmering under the moon.
Rahan will now be at the mercy of everything and everyone!
Page thirteen.

Would not death be better than this endless night?
Would not Rahan be better off joining the "Territory of Shadows"?

The idea of killing himself crossed his mind.
No! Do not do that "Fire-Hair"!
You are right, Bakkou! Rahan wants to live! Rahan must live!

And that night he finally tore himself away from this prostration.
You say that the sorcerer and when he claims to have forgotten the "Medicine" which restores sight?

I am sure of it, Brother!
So, Kahik must revive our eyes!
Rahan knows what he must do.
But he will need you, Bakkou!

The night was ending when the son of Crao, guided by the child, burst into the sorcerer's hut.
Oh! What! What.

Do not move, Kahik! Do not move, otherwise.
Rahan would never kill a man in cold blood. But Kahik did not know that.

Page Fourteen.

No one saw the raft that carried the two men and the child to the "Blue Reefs."
But why are you tying my hands? What. What do you want to do with me?

Argh!
The son of Crao had just dove in, dragging the sorcerer with his wrists bound.

He did not see the seaweed or the fish that were fleeing.
But, from Kahik's gestures he guessed that the "Ghost" was there.

He divined it approaching.
And suddenly, the slimy tentacles enveloped him.
He knew that they were also enclosing the sorcerer!

The two men disappeared for a moment in this horrifying mass of slimy "Flesh". It was only then that Rahan began to strike, strike, strike.

Page Fifteen.

The monstrous embrace immediately released.
The "Water Monster” Gives Up!

The Medusa moved away. Its umbrella waved softly. Its viscera throbbed in its diaphanous body.

But Kahik no longer saw this monster.
Like the clan leader, like Rahan, the sorcerer had become blind!
My eyes!
The Phantom has killed my eyes!
This way! Swim to me! Quick! The "Blue-skins" might come back!

An instant later.
My poor eyes, my poor eyes.
Stop moaning, Kahik!
Maybe you will find sight when you regain your memory! Who knows!

As soon as the raft reached the beach, the sorcerer shouted.
I remember the "Medicine"! Yes, yes, His secret comes back to me!
Hold, hold.

Page Sixteen.

I need roots, of "Zambe." And leaves of "Kaha." And berries of Nahoko"! Quickly!

The clan members immediately went to the nearby forest.
Well, Kaik. It is strange how your memory suddenly came back to you!

A little later.
Father! Rahan! Kahik prepares his "Medicine"!
He will not be able to refuse to heal you! The clan would not forgive him!

Under the eyes of the attentive fishermen, the sorcerer crushed roots, pounded berries and leaves.
Blessed be the spirits who have restored your memory, Kahik!

Kakik, the chief, and the son of Crao drank the strange mixture. The fever took hold of them again.
And their sleep was filled with nightmares.
It was, for Bakkou, a long night of anguish.
Will "Medicine" cure them?

Page Seventeen.

And, at dawn, it was a miracle.
Ra-ha-ha!
Rahan sees again! Rahan's eyes came back to life!
And mine also! And mine also!

The son of Crao gazed at the horizon set ablaze by the rising sun for a long time.
This sun that he had thought he would never see again.
This is marvelous, father! I am happy!

Rahan too, Bakkou! But he will only be truly happy when we have rid the lagoon of the “Phantom"!

But that is impossible, brother! You have proven that no one can approach him without becoming blind!
We do not approach him!

But we will tear him away from his "Territory"! And Rahan knows how! You will only have to help him!

The son of Crao had learned, from other clans, how to make "Tiles" of lines.
The one he had woven was the size of the "Phantom of the Lagoon."

Page Eighteen.

A few days later.
When Rahan has lured this monster above the trap, he will pull this vine! You will hoist the net as quickly as possible!

Rahan dove once more. While spotting the giant jellyfish was easy, attracting it was less so.
Hum, this time Rahan must not approach it!

It was only after several dives that Rahan succeeded.
"He" chases Rahan! "He" arrives over the net! It is time!

At his signal the trap closed abruptly, imprisoning the translucent monster.

Ra-ha-ha!
All the fishermen, resolute but anxious, were already hauling the heavy "Net."
We have him! We have captured the Phantom!

Page Nineteen.

A roar arose as the jellyfish appeared, a huge, shapeless mass filled with water.
Let no one touch!
This "Thing" is out of his kingdom!
It should die soon!

The death of this aquatic monster was quicker and far stranger than Rahan had expected.

Brought back to shore, this "Thing" that had haunted the lagoon for so long, this "Thing" that unfolded so majestically in the deep waters.

Became later, on the beach, nothing but a flaccid, slimy mass!
The water monster is melting!

Jellyfish are composed of 95 percent water and their bodies represent only 5 percent of their total mass.

Soon there were only a few remains left, which quickly disintegrated under the burning sun!
The “Phantom” disappeared!

Page Twenty.

You can now dive into the lagoon without fear, brothers!
The whole clan cheered the son of Crao.

And we owe this to your courage, "Fire-hair"!
But no, but no.
A slight smile lit up Rahan's face.

We owe this to Kahik who was able to regain his memory and remember his "Medicine"!

Is that not so, Kahik?
Hum.
The Sorcerer tried to put on a brave face, but none of his people were fooled.

Mockingly, the son of Crao applauded the sorcerer.
And if the "Blue Reefs" clan imitated him, it was because "Those-Who-Walk-Upright" sometimes knew, even in these fierce times, how to show humor.
