The Nazis are regarded as the shared evil that most Europeans had to face. As the rise of both Nazism and communism caused up 80 million deaths in Europe, and communism even more so throughout the following decades.

In Irish schools, we used to be taught how both the Nazi and communist mind developed. They are both authoritarian regimes that rely on fear to secure power.

Both the Nazi and communists decided to scapegoat Jews as the source of all society's issues. The Nazis killed approximately 17million people in these death camps.

They also tried to get rid of capitalism, democracy and Christian culture. This is why Western cultures try to remember why these atrocities were allowed to happen, and why they never again should be allowed to happen.

Despite the anti-Irish propaganda, it is reported that over 100,000 Irish people fought against the Nazis in WW2. My grandfather was an engineer for the Allies, which is how he met my grandmother.

This Holocaust Memorial Day I’d like people to reflect on the Nazis and communists came to power, why did they scapegoat the Jew specifically, and what happened to Jewish people in the middle east afterwards?

Why is history repeating itself now? Why has the politics for the past 5 years been nothing but scapegoating groups of people and using violence?

Never again is now.
