In this episode, using Kurt’s diary as a framework and associated film footage to bring his story to life we’ll experience this monumental fixed battle and see exactly how the divisional commander, Paul Hausser got injured in the field.

In the morning hours we push up to the edge of the forest in the hollow. Our heavy weapons are put into position and our artillery and rocket launchers bombard the enemy with a hail of fire in preparation of our attack. This continues for hours. In the afternoon Lieutenant General Hausser comes up to our most advanced position to get a feel for the situation. He asks me to explain the positioning of our mortar and then turns to walk a short distance back into the forest towards the 7th Company’s command post. At this moment a heavy enemy mortar shell lands between him and us and he’s injured by a substantial piece of shrapnel in the face near his eye. Unfazed he is quickly bandaged and evacuated back to his command post. The incident seemingly has more of an effect on us than on him. What would be do if our Papa Hauser suddenly were no longer with us?

In the meantime, with the advantage gained by our heavy bombardment, various combat groups have worked their way forwards and then pushed into the Russian positions. Most importantly they manage to put the automatic flamethrowers out of commission. Part of the 5th company have been able to advance up the left side of the road and taken the high ground which allows them to engage the enemy’s flank. This give my mortar team the opportunity to move our position forwards out of the depression and up against the opposite slope. The Russian defensive fire begins to weaken.

The sudden penetration through the enemy’s well prepared positions effected the enemy’s moral to such an extent that resistance immediately melted away with those retreating that could and the rest surrendering. As the sun went down we found ourselves in the heights having occupied the last of the Russian positions. The battlefield now fell silent, this day we were also able to master.

Paul Hausser served as an officer in the Prussian Army during World War I and attained the rank of general in the inter-war Reichsheer. After retirement, he joined the SS and was instrumental in forming the Waffen-SS. During World War II, he rose to the level of army group commander. He led Waffen-SS troops in the Third Battle of Kharkov, the Battle of Kursk and the Normandy Campaign. Hausser was the highest-ranking officer in the Waffen-SS alongside Sepp Dietrich. Unlike Dietrich, Hausser was a trained staff officer before joining the SS.

After the war he became a founding member and the first spokesperson of HIAG, a lobby group and a revisionist veterans' organisation, founded by former high-ranking Waffen-SS personnel in West Germany in 1951. It campaigned for the restoration of legal and economic rights of the Waffen-SS employing a multi-prong propaganda campaign to achieve its aims.

Hausser wrote two books, arguing the purely military role of the Waffen-SS and advancing the notion that its troops were "soldiers like any other", according to the title of the second book. Under Hausser's leadership, HIAG reshaped the image of the Waffen-SS as a so-called pan-European force that fought honorably and had no part in war crimes or Nazi atrocities.
